Wondering who that could be, I poke my head through the bedroom window which faced the front yard and road below.
Heaving myself a bit lower, I see a familiar head outside our front door, none other than my mother's boyfriend Mason.
He presses the electric bell once more, and the loud ring follows again.
I groan, Does he not know that she's at work? Deciding it's rather impolite to not answer the door, I practically skip downstairs and shrug on the shirt I left on the couch earlier, over the blue tank top I wore.
I swing open the door and muster up a polite smile,"Hey there". "Hello Blair" he says back blankly, causing my skin to go clammy. I wait for him to say something but he doesn't, forcing me to speak.
"Well.. if you're wondering, my mother is not home" I say awkwardly. Ugh, who knew conversing with your mother's lover you hardly met, could be this weird?
"Yes, I do know that, but I'm not here for your mother, I'm here to pick up some stuff" he says curtly. "And I'm kind of running late" he adds looking at me as if I'd grown another head.
"Oh.. I'm sorry, come in" I choke out fiddly, moving aside to let him in and close the door with a click. Turning around, I find him already making his way to my mother's room down the hall.
Letting out the breath I had held in unconsciously, I plop on the couch and wait a while. After around ten minutes, I passed by scrolling through lame stuff on instagram, I turn around to footsteps down the hallway.
Mason walks towards me with what looks like a small bag on his shoulders. "That's that" he says, "I'll leave now, and your mother told me to inform you that she was staying with me for a few days and that she'll be here to send you off to the airport on Saturday" he adds in a breath.
I blink at him for a few seconds not understanding, but realisation hit me and I nod at him, he nods back and says, "And congratulations on getting in Denver, wish you luck".
With that he leaves, and I lock the door. Suddenly feeling tired and nauseous I abandon my untidy bedroom and fall face front on the couch, pressing my face deep into it and letting one arm to dangle off it.
Willing myself to not think about it, I fail and say to myself, She's abandoning me, my mother is abandoning me! Yet again. I drift off to sleep through a haze of confusion.
_______________
I jolt awake from my thoughts of a nightmare. The usual visual of the dark room I was once tied up in.
Dammit.
I realise I'm laying on the floor between the couch and table. 'Must have fallen down' I think to myself and get off the floor, only to be hit by a wave of darkness. Plopping back on the couch, I rub my throbbing temples.
Gosh, I should start eating something or else I'll starve to death. Getting up again, this time rather slowly to the refrigerator, I take a swig of the cold orange juice straight from the carton. Leaving it on the counter I close the refrigerator and trudge upstairs to my room, yeah so much for trying not to starve.
It's dark outside, how long did I even sleep? Flicking on the various switches down the hallway and my room, I take my laptop and sit on the bed. I search and open websites and hover over the enter button, to cancel my ticket on Saturday to Colorado.
Not like I'm gonna stay here, I'm cancelling it to book one earlier so that I can leave before my mom realises, so that I don't have to see her or her pitiful eyes. Her eyes have always been pitiful towards me. Ever since those.. NO! Do not go there! I bite my cheeks.
