Chapter 2

I wake up to the sound of my androids ring. And the sound of my mom packing her box into the transport tube. The soldiers are already here and I can overhear them talking about how I'm not ready yet and any others would be jumping at the chance to get a spot on this trip. So I sway off my bed, walk to my closet and take out the mandatory shiny wetsuit on and matching elastics. The soldiers begin escorting my mother and I to the bus parked outside our door steps which will transport us back to the NL office. I sit down in the leather booths looking out of the window. Seeing the un-colorful blurs of chrome buildings and billboards which I never thought I'd miss. On the bus there was a tall brunette tour guide who illustrated the rules and regulations of the trip onto the bus screens. She told us how the children would be on a separate wing during the flight; and it would be filled with games, snacks and other things to keep us busy. My mom along with the other adults and parents would be on the other wing. The woman's speech basically took up the whole bus ride and was abruptly interrupted by the screech of the bus wheels as we stopped in front of the office.

We all go out one by one, me dragging my feet down the steel stairs of the bus. We lined up in single file and walked through the automatic doors. It was time to board the rocket. We were immediately organized into different lines corresponding to different portal numbers to get through the shuttle. We walked through the automatic doors in our lines and there in front of our eyes was our temporary home the black and silver rocket, stationed in the middle of the large open room. Steam sounded like the stopping of an old train in one of those black and white movies, and the aluminum staircase unraveled out of the side of the rocket. "One by one into the rocket everyone" announced the soldiers. My mom grabbed my hand tightly and looked me straight in the eyes before we both took our first steps into our new life.

My mom's tight grasp on my hand was loosened as I shuffled with the crowd of kids toward our wing for the flight. There were rows of seats which we're organized alphabetically once again, but this time according to our first names. The seatbelt sign lit up the semi dark rooms ceiling. We all sat down. My seatbelt closed over my waist, it was time for takeoff. I knew we wouldn't have to be sitting for long as the crew members had prepared games and snacks for us. I could hear the whistling of the rocket's wheels emerging into the rocket. My hands start to sweat and my fear of this all going wrong got even greater. I close my eyes tightly as we quickly rose out of the NL office's rooftop. I hear a soft raspy voice call my name. I open my eyes. A boy with loose brown hair and light eyes is staring at me.

'Hi'

I say. The boy sticks out his hand and grabs mine. 'The names Ethan' he whispers.

'Ella'

I say shyly as I look away. The boy continued to talk to me, but I just looked away disregarding whatever he was saying. The seat belt sign turned off and the rockets lights illuminated the room. The seatbelts rose up and we were all released from our seats. I got up and almost fell over my own feet. I slowly walk towards the table packed with pencils, paper and paints. It seems like I and the younger girl walking quietly in front of me are the only ones interested in this as everyone else is at the darts table or just chatting with the others. I sit down in the clear chairs beside the silent girl who was walking ahead of me. I grab a paper and start humming. Writing each note on the vague treble clef I had drawn on the paper. Minutes went by and I could slowly hear the quiet girl beginning to break her streak of silence.

'Ella right?'

she said.

'Yeah....'I responded back.

'You know the boys been staring at you for hours right?' "

What boy?"

I wondered, I don't even know anyone on this ship.

"The one over there!"

She discreetly pointed to. She was pointing to Ethan the boy who sat beside me at the beginning of the flight. But what would he want from me? I thought quietly to myself.

"I'm Tara by the way"

"Ella"

we started a conversation that lasted a bit over an hour. She told me how her dad is an architect, and was sent on this trip to design the future bases in our new world. That would now act as our homes.

We still have a long way to go. Our seats will soon be swapped for reclining seats as beds, and we will spend the night on the ship. The bed signal projected on the walls in front of us, as it was our curfew. We all walked back to our seats, sat down and grabbed our blanket and pillow kit from under our seats. I unlocked the aluminum box and placed my pillow behind my head and the blanket on my lap. Ethan, Tara and the others all unpacked their boxes as well. The lights slowly started to dim until there was complete silence and darkness over the whole wing. I move around until I find the most comfortable position to spend the night in, and my eyelids slowly start to close until I fell asleep.
