CHAPTER 2: THE INTERVIEW

“Hi.” I greeted, a bit nervously.

It wasn’t my first time being on national television or being on a talk-show because people found it very interesting that a girl had actually gotten into the NHL, but it was still nerve-wracking everytime. It was a huge accomplishment, it was, but it was my first time on a show as popular as Ellen DeGeneres.

“Hi there,” She said to me as I sat down beside her. “How are you?”

“I’m great, thank you so much for having me, I’m a big fan of your show.”

“Well, thank you. That’s really nice of you, I’m a big fan of yours as well.”

I smiled. “Thank you.”

“Now, if any of you don’t know who this is. Rosaline Williams is the first woman ever to play in the NHL and to sign with an NHL team, I don’t watch a lot of hockey, but I know that that is a huge accomplishment.” She said, and the crowd cheered for me and I smiled over at their friendly faces.

“Thank you.” I smiled.

“I know that couldn’t have been easy.” She told me.

I smiled, “Definitely not, it’s a lot of training and a lot of time to dedicate. You really have to want it.”

“And obviously you did, you’ve always wanted to play hockey since you were really young?”

“Always, yeah. I think I just saw my dad play and I picked up on it quickly and since then I always wanted to challenge myself, especially alongside my brother. And I think it’s because of him that I started to play professional hockey with boys at such a young age.”

“And how old were you at that time?” She asked.

“I was 14 years old.”

She widened her eyes, and I could hear a few reactions from the crowd.

“I was already in training camp for an international tournament with the women's hockey team and stuff like that, so I was ready to play with them. It took a few weeks to get it approved, but once they saw that I could actually play pretty good they made an exception, and I became the first female forward in a men's junior league.”

“That’s incredible. And how old are you now?” She asked.

"I'm 19." I said. A few more reactions from the crowd and I laughed.

"Wow, that's insane. And now your in the NHL.”

I nodded, and smiled. “Yeah, I wanted to go all the way.”

She smiled. “Amazing. And do you mind talking about your last few years, because I’ve heard that you’ve been through so much and I think it’s so inspirational that you’re still standing here and that you’ve accomplished so much.”

I nodded. “Yeah.”

“So you’re parents passed away last year?”

I nodded. “Yes, my dad died of heart disease, and my mother died in a car crash. Unfortunately, it was on the same day.”

“And do you have any brothers?”

“I have 3 brothers. Nick also played in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, Sam has been overseas here and there, and I don't know where my brother Matthew is unfortunately.”
