In his early days as a cadet there was a captain that saw his potential, therefore requesting to have him in her squad, she trained everyone well, everyone learned and developed almost flawlessly, he would never forget his captain, she was a symbol for him, someone with absolute power and authority, he respected her, she was a being he admired and strived to be, she knew to be professional and she kept everything at bay, while gradually moving everyone up in strength, he learned all half of his combat from her, she created his era, he wanted to be at level with her, it probably doesn't make sense..any of this but basically she was his goal, her expectations of him made him strive to become better, of course she had expectations of everyone, she worked hard with everyone, she knew her cadets weaknesses and told everyone what they lacked, what had to be worked on, to work around postures that couldn't be fixed, she shaped everyone into who they were now before they embarked on this team, this man didn't die merely as a soldier, he died a courageous man who sliced every titan with fire in his eyes, this woman didn't leave the safety of these walls as a soldier who got sent to her deathbed while quaking in her boots, she left as a woman who knew her own potential and was confident in her skills as a survey corpse soldier, to sacrifice herself for humanity, this kid with a weird head? He left with his stomach turning but with good confidence in his skills to at least get past one beast, leading more of all these soldiers? Was her, she was confident and she was strong, she knew her squad was strong as well, after all she helped them stand up, do you understand? Do you have even the slightest clue why he admired her? she was a good woman, she was calm, didn't fret over anything and didn't complain when you took away something from her, she didn't care if some of her squad members talked ill of her because of her way of training, because in the end she knew they were just doubtful of themselves and they were afraid to think they were training to be sent to die, which was true but she didn't think it was worth getting scared over, because in her mind "as long as you're standing on these training grounds now, you will continue to stand there, until you actually face death will it be when you should truly be afraid, but until then you should train and steel your skills to the best you can."
He never got the chance to stand at level with his captain, one day they had an expedition, but she had injured her hip and couldn't ride on her horse any longer, she had her title as captain taken away, she didn't complain, she didn't look displeased, she simple stepped down from her mighty cloud and descended down the stairs that lead to where he stood, she had seen him and she gave him a pat on his head "train them hard levi" she spoke before leaving, he clenched his fists hard and frustration started building up, how dare they he thought how dare they take her away like this, when i was so close he was infuriated, with those higher ups and himself, the higher ups didn't realize their mistake and boy did he want to scream it in their faces about what they just did, with himself because he couldn't level up faster.
He was moved up the ranks and given the title as captain, the title she once had, he remembered her words "train them hard levi" is this what she meant? Did she know he would become captain? He was happy in the least, his former captain knew about him, she knew he had better skills than everyone else, he didn't want to disappoint her, he did train everyone as best he could just like she did, until one day, that day when zhinganshina fell, he wasn't there, they were on an expedition, an attack had happened and he didn't even know it was happening until he got back to the walls, the wall was broken, humanity took a fatal fall that day, he took one too, his former captain had been caught in the attack and by hearing the report, she was caught in the abrupt attack the humanoid beast did when it all commenced, he felt like he let down someone who didn't even know he was trying to impress, he wanted her to see him one day and look proudly at, he wanted her pat on his head again and for her to tell him "good job levi" was he too hopeful? Levi wanted to avenge his captain, he wanted to kill the monster that was said to be so big that it peeked over the wall.
