"You ready to finally get out of this hellhole?" Astrid asked with her signature grin. Her forest green eyes seemed to glow and her signature pulsed, warming me.

Every magical being in the world had a signature. Something that hit one or more of the 5 senses. The more senses the signature touched, the more powerful the Magica. Most of the time, good magic had a pleasant signature, and dark magic had a foul one, like decay or burning rubber.

Astrid's was like stepping into a warm grassy meadow with chirping birds in the trees.

"You bet. I can't wait to eat real food again. I can't believe I survived, mostly because of you." If she hadn't protected and trained me in the beginning, I wouldn't be here.

"Mostly?" She said with a raised brow

"Fine, completely because of you." She smirked, I huffed.

"Astrid?" I hesitated.

"Yeah?"

"If something goes wrong," I took a deep breath. I didn't want anything to go wrong, but stuff rarely went my way. "Thank you for saving me on my first day, teaching me about the Magica, and for being my friend."

The night Astrid saved me, she started teaching me about the real world. I learned about the Magica- Elves, Dwarves, Mages, Goblins, and other supernaturals. She also taught me how to fight better, with or without a weapon. Along with being my mentor, she became my best friend.

"You don't have to thank me. I would be as nutty as Olga right now without you," We smiled at her joke. Olga was a crazy dwarf that was brought in a while back.

The guards didn't care if we had weapons or killed each other, it made their job easier if we were fighting each other. As long as we didn't attack the guards or try to escape, they wouldn't hurt us, mostly. In the beginning, they tried to knock me around, but Astrid would always protect me. After a few months, I was able to fight back.

"Remember when I broke that guard's wrist?" I laughed. No one bothered me after that, except for the newbies who thought I was weak just because I was human. I left them crying for their mommys

"The look on his face was priceless!" Astrid giggled.

5 minutes later, the jingling of keys and footsteps from further down the corridor signaled it was go time.

"Remember the plan. Wing it." Twin smirks spread across our faces as I spoke. We knelt down on the right side of the door in the shadows and waited for the guard to open the door.

I patted my pocket, feeling my dagger. I had stolen the dagger from a gnome after he was killed by a goblin. Astrid used her rune magic to carve the return rune on the blade and its sheath, which meant the dagger would always return to its sheath.

When the guards opened the cell door, I jumped up and surprised the guard with a strong punch. Astrid rushed out from behind me and took down the second guard before they could react.

As I lowered the bodies to the ground, Astrid turned on the third guard. The guard must have been a shield mage because she had a glowing blue shield surrounding her. I took out my dagger and stabbed the shield, shattering it. As her eyes widened in surprise, Astrid knocked her out with a painful punch to the jaw.

"Good job. Help me pat them down." I said and started on the first guard. He was carrying 6 small glass balls full of sparkly purple liquid and a pack of watermelon gum. Jackpot! The second guard also had a few sleeping potion bombs, but that was it.

"What does she have?" I questioned.

"Sleeping potion bombs, and some money." She replied.

"Ha! I got Gum!" I declared. Astrid just rolled her eyes.

"How will gum help us escape?"

"You're just jealous," I said with a smug grin. "Don't worry, you can have some." She just rolled her eyes again. She really reminded me of Bree sometimes. I missed her. "You got her key? The boys weren't carrying theirs." Every guard was supposed to carry a key that helped them navigate the Maze. Without it, escaping would be impossible.

"Yep!" She held out his hand, showing me an intricate, silver skeleton key. "Lets go!"

OoOoO

Guess what I found while reading random animal facts. Snails can sleep for 3 years! 3 YEARS! Gosh, I wish I could sleep that long.
