Twenty- five Years later.
I stared at the two little sweethearts in front of me. They had teary eyes as I told them the story of why I had named the foundation I built for people who were a bit different, 'Layla Cunningham's Foundation'.
"Daddy, that was unfair. No one should have done that to her." Macy, my fourteen years old, first child sniffed. She resembled her mother way too much. The same way her natural black curly hair bounced along with her dark skin, the way her brown eyes dimmed slightly when she cried, everything.
"I wish I met Layla before she died. She seemed really nice." My second child, Jean, pouted. She was nine. She looked a bit more like me. While her skin was a bit lighter then her older sister's, her hair was just and thick and curly. Her eyes which resembled mine always twinkled with mischief and mystery.
I pulled them into a hug and thought about the circumstances that had put me in this situation. Although I wish things had gone differently with Layla, I wouldn't change the way things were now.
After high school, Jaime decided that college wasn't his thing and took over his Father's textile industry. I got a full scholarship into a prestigious sports university for baseball. My mom was really happy about it and I was really happy that her health had improved drastically. I became a professional baseball player for seven years and in the course of my career, I met the love of life, Jane.
In my third year of going professional, My baseball team was invited as guests to a fundraiser for people with Parkinson's. The moment I saw her walk up to that stage, I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Her dark skin shone brighter than anything I had ever seen. Her smile was so captivating, her hair was a curly mess that she alone could pull off. I thought she was incredible. She had a way of capturing the audience's attention but still had this delicate aura seeping out of her.
I decided to talk to her after the event and then we just hit it off. I told her the story of the girl with the blue umbrella. I told her that I wanted to create a place where people could interact without fear. A place where people who were different from others could learn and grow as whoever they wanted to be.
She supported me in creating Layla Cunningham's foundation and in the course of that journey, we fell in love and got married four years later.
"Okay I'm tired of this hug." Jean said pushing me away and pulling me out of my thoughts. I laughed and let go of the two off them.
"So what happened to those who were taken to jail?" Jean asked.
"Oh those guys were charged for rape and those who uploaded and created the website where accomplices so they received their own jail time and community service. The girl were charged for battery and also did community service. I assure you, their lives have changed now."
"I just have one more question Dad." Macy inquired.
"Yes sweetie?"
"You have gone through a lot in life, I can't deny that. But are you happy now?"
Before I was able to answer that question, my wife slammed the door open.
"You!" She yelled, pointing to me.
"Oh no." I winced.
"You sneaky snake! You know I only have one week left for organization of the annual Layla Cunningham fundraiser so I am very busy what did you do, you hid up here in the attic with the girls. I am very stress out as it is, so march downstairs for dinner now!" Her face was red as she yelled at the three of us and she kept sweeping her untamed hair out of her face because it kept falling in front of her face. It was hard to take her seriously because it was a hilarious sight.
So I did what every normal husband would do and laughed in her face. My kids joined me as i did that which made her join in the laughter too .
"No seriously, I give up. Now please come downstairs. Let's eat dinner." She breathed out.
"Now you accept that you can't do all the work for the fundraiser and make dinner at the same time." I snickered.
"Haha. Stick to making dinner." She laughed sarcastically. "Now March!"
"Yaaay mom cooked, Dad's food is really bad, yuck!" Jean snickered and ran out of the room.
"Yeah you better run!" I called after her.
"Oh please we know she's joking." Jane rolled her eyes.
"She might not be after all." Macy laughed as she left the attic.
"Hey babe." She wiggled her eyebrows at me. "Would you mind leaving the attic now? You may not be hungry but I am."
"What's going on?" I asked as I left the attic.
"What do you mean?" She tucked her hair behind her ear and looked to the ground while fiddling with her fingers.
"Hey." I raised her chin up so that she could look me in my eyes. "You're my sweetheart, you know? And I love you very very much. I know when something's on your mind."
"Fine. I know we planned on having just two children but it's your fault that another one's on the way." She said quietly and averted her eyes.
"Wait what?"
"What what?"
"What?"
"Huh?"
"What?"
"Are you mad?"***
"Did you say what I think you just said?"
"Yup. He's gone crazy."
"I am going to have another child? You're serious?" I said and looked her stomach.
"Yeah."
I pulled her into a hug and twirled her around. Laughter and giggles filled the air as I thought about having another child.
"Put me down before I vomit on you." She giggled.
I dropped her on her feet and hugged her from behind. "May I?" I asked for permission to touch her stomach and she nodded in response.
I placed my hand on her stomach and before I knew it I was bubbling with joy. "This new addition to our family is going be a bundle of joy."
"Are you delighted?" Jane smiled.
"I am very happy and I wouldn't change anything."
