I tiptoed down the stairs. I knew they could hear any noise, nonetheless I tried to be quiet. The repelling gear hung heavy in the backpack and the rope weighed down my arm. I got to the front door without any incident.
As I tried opening it a hand shot out and kept it closed. I gasped and jumped back. Luca's face materialized from the shadows.
"What do you think you're doing?" He asked with an even voice.
"Nothing." I mumbled, looking down.
He sighed and pulled the hand holding the rope from behind my back. "You were leaving in the dead of night with a rope and you expect me not to be suspicious?"
"I wasn't doing anything like that." I retorted.
He rubbed his face with his hand. "I don't know what to do with you sometimes, Mira."
That set me off. "Yeah well you wouldn't have to worry about me if you'd decided to stay out of my life. But no. Instead you drag me here and force me to live here with you. You won't tell me where my mother is and I can't do anything without a babysitter."
He folded his arms. "I only do that cause I care-"
"No!" I hated when people lied. "I don't believe for a second that you or anyone cares. I'm a useless lowlife. What do you see in me? There's gotta be some ulterior motive behind this." My face was heated.
He whipped his hand through the air and he started saying something. My mind went blank in a moment of panic. I stumbled back in a moment of panic and brought my hands up to cover my face. Not this again. No.
"Mira?" Luca's voice sounded worried.
I whimpered and brought down my arms.
Luca seemed to understand somehow. He hugged me tight and whispered in my ear, "Whoever did this to you is gonna pay."
