Well, they didn't expect this to go perfectly.
No, they haven't gotten caught yet. It's only the third day, December 14th, Alex's birthday and—more importantly, their (fake) anniversary.
Jack is in fact planning something, but it's more just a "we're getting the fuck out of the house and doing literally anything else" kind of thing.
To the two of them, it's Alex's birthday celebration thing, but to the rest of Jack's family, it's a romantic night out or some sappy bullshit.
At breakfast, Jack sneaks up behind Alex and hugs him around the waist while Alex scrambles some eggs. This of course catches the shorter man off guard, startling him enough that he knocks some of the eggs out of the pan and onto the stove.
"Nice one, dork," Alex barely manages to laugh off, hoping Jack gets the message to fuck off. "You scared the shit out of me."
Jack's mother just that unfortunate moment to walk in. "Language, please, Alex. 24, now, or not, there is no cursing under my roof."
Jack snorts. "Since when? You curse like a sailor."
His mother glowers at him, and Jack shuts up fast.Alex does his best to clean up the mess after he's finished eating and given the stove some time to cool.
Jack's father pretty much ignores Alex entirely as he rinses his plate, despite Alex's warm greeting. It's become common place for Mr. Barakat to treat Alex as though he wasn't there. Alex half wonders if Jack ever had to deal with this in high school after he came out.
It's bullshit.
To make up for Alex's suspicious dislike for surprise cuddles, Alex lays down on the couch where Jack is sitting, his head in Jack's lap as he scrolls through his phone.
Jack is watching Home Alone again, since their plans aren't until later. May pays them no mind as she makes her way across the living room.
As the sister to Jack, rather than parent, as well as being closer to Jack in age, May is not even the slightest bit homophobic. She couldn't give a flying fuck who who her brother decides to fall for, that's not any of her business. But, as a fellow resident of this household, there's only so much support she can show without her parents starting to resent her as much as they do Alex and Jack.
Alex of course, doesn't know this, and sends a glare toward the door May had just walked through. Jack gives him a questioning look, but doesn't say anything. Maybe May talked to him? Who knows.
Pretty soon, it's getting dark, and Jack is urging Alex to wear something nice so it looks like they're going out to do something fancy and romantic.
Alex, already sick of this shit, throws on a pair of black jeans, double checking that there are no holes in them, then buttons up a flannel. Whatever Jack has planned is low key, and like hell is Alex wearing something Fancy.
Jack, in all his skunk hair glory, is wearing gray skinny jeans and a black, button-down shirt.
Underdressed and overwhelmed, they head out to Jack's car and take off for the small, nearby town.
The fanciest restaurant nearby is a mexican restaurant, and they do not go there.
Instead, they head to the pizza place a few miles further down the road. It's crowded since it's a weekend, so they take their pizza to go and head back to the car. It's too cold to stay outside, so they chill in the parking lot.
"I'm so glad you didn't make me actually go do something crazy," Alex says as he grabs a slice of pizza out of the box. "I think I'd actually die."
Jack shrugs. "I just needed my parents to think we were doing something. Besides," he says, "you looked like you needed time out of the house anyway."
