We have often seen books which look like historical fiction, but is more like a random movie. There are stories which have inputs of Persian culture but is quite comically set in London, and there are Indian Historical Fiction books which actually is all about the Ottoman empire.
It is important for us to do research and be careful about portrayal of a particular culture before proceeding to write a histfic. Wrong portrayal ends up creating an illusion for the readers and also insulting a community of people.
Sure, a book may have all characters as fictional and not based on any real life character, as in many Egyptian mythology based books, but the culture and daily life of the common folk and royals shown in the book must have relevance to the way of life people practiced in that particular era in Egypt.
