An all too familiar chill sent a shock down my spine, causing my body to shiver. We were in Harlem, the same place my—attack—took place. Yet I wasn’t afraid. I pitied the fool who tried to attack me now with my new found powers.

Candy led me down a few streets and alley ways, until we stopped in front of a building. It was a few stories, an apartment building, with boards over all the windows. The building screamed “Condemned.”

“It’s not the Hilton,” Candy sighed as she saw the look on my face, “But it is home.”

We walked up the stoop and to the chipped door. Candy gave a knock that sounded like a code. “Who is it!” a voice called back.

“Candy, and I brought a friend.”

The door was snatched open by a little blonde girl. “I don’t know if D would like that you brought someone here,” she said putting her hands on her hips. She couldn’t have been more than twelve, but here she was; dressed in a short cut tank-top and daisy-duke shorts.  Her make-up was caked on.

“He’ll be fine,” Candy said as she took me by the hand. The inside of the building was pitch-black. There was a faint light beaming from the top of the stairs. Candy led me up the stairs where it got brighter and brighter. I could now see the peeling wall paper and the dirt and grime. At the top of the stairs was a cracked door. Candy gave me a reassuring look and then we walked in.

The room was small, and dirty. The white walls were now stained and disgusting. The floor was covered in blankets and mats. On each blanket was a girl. The room was filled with girls of all ages and ethnicities. All of their heads snapped toward me. In the center of the room was a reclining chair in front of a T.V. Sitting in the chair was a beefy dark man, with a bald head and a pierced ear. In his lap was a very young, topless Asian girl. He took one look at me and slung the girl to the floor.

“Candy who is this!” he shouted.

“A friend of mine,” Candy said, her voice filled with confidence, “She was put out by her folks with no place to go.”

“Really,” D said, his facing starting to lose its anger.

“Yes,” Candy said looking at me.

“I’m pregnant,” I sighed, trying to sound as pathetic as possible, “I have nowhere else to go. I’ll do anything I can to take care of this child.”

“Now don’t worry about that,” D smiled jumping up from his chair. He wrapped his thick arm around me and began to lead me towards a door. “Now you just worry about resting and having that baby and we’ll worry about taking care of it when it gets here. Now due to you condition, you get the bed.”

I looked back, Candy stood there with a look of sadness.

“I don’t know if I could sleep alone in a strange place,” I whimpered, “Can Candy share the bed with me.”

            Candy’s face lit up.

“Whatever,” D said taking his arm from around me.

Candy ran up and grabbed my hand and led me through a door. The other room was smaller than the first. There was a grimy window leading to a fire escape, and then a bed. The bed only had a sheet sprawled on it, and the mattress was stained. I guess for the other girl’s though, they would kill to sleep on a bed. Candy dived onto a started making snow angles.
