The day I went back home, after the seemingly stressful but unique interview, I was welcomed home with a huge hug. My uncle was practically glowing. His smile was so wide, it was the only visible thing on his face.
"I told you that I knew who I raised." He said, releasing me. "I don't know why I'm surprised that you won in the first place. I knew you would win. Congratulations my dear."
"Yeah right, thanks." I said with a roll of my eyes, despite the happiness that was radiating through me. After making my way to my room and dumping my luggage in there, I made my way back to the living room and collapsed on the couch. My uncle came out from the kitchen, most likely having finished making dinner. He sat on the couch opposite mine.
"Work starts Monday." I started to tell him, at his silent urging. "But do you know the best part uncle?" I said, trying to make myself comfortable on the couch.
"What?" My uncle answered.
"Guess how much my salary is." I questioned back, my eyes twinkling. My uncle looked at me curiously.
"I don't know, fifty thousand dollars?" He said teasingly, never so far from the answer.
"Five hundred thousand dollars." I said with glee, especially after seeing the way my uncle's eyes were about to pop out.
"What?!" He said, as he stood up so quick, I thought it impossible.
"Half a million?! You're going to start earning half a million dollars as from Monday?!". I nodded my head enthusiastically, managing to stand up on my feet to join my uncle. He made his way towards me and held my hands, both of us jumping around the living room like little children in glee.
"We are rich! We are finally rich! Ha ha ha!" My uncle said while laughing.
"We are so moving out of here." He said after we had settled down. I looked at him questioningly.
"But why? I thought you loved the place"
"Yeah well, its getting old, and we really do need to leave. I had been saving money to buy a new house, but I think your salary would suffice."
I crossed my hands over my chest and raised my eyebrows at him.
"What makes you think I would use my money to buy a house?" I asked him. My uncle looked at me knowingly. I sighed in playful frustration.
"Okay, so just because I don't have a social life, you automatically have to buy a house for us?" I said teasingly.
"Not to mention all the money of mine you spent when jobless and broke while I worked my ass off." He countered.
"Okay okay, take whatever amount you want. I'm just saying this because you made me go for the interview in the first place." My uncle gave a huge smile.
"Even if I didn't, any salary you managed to make during the remaining course of your life will be spent by us both, as your payment for lousing around during your jobless phase while I worked hard."
"Oh my, uncle," I said, faking a shocked expression. "For the course of my life? I was jobless for say what, five years?"
"A year for you equals ten for me." He countered.
"I didn't know you were that, stingy uncle. Good grace." I said with a scoff.
"Yeah. And imma enjoy the money you make. Maybe I should even quit my job." He said, mindlessly making his way to the kitchen.
"Do not try that uncle. At all. Our contract will only stand based on the fact that you will remain the bread winner of the house. And please, stop talking like a young person. Its really, really weird, coming from you."
"Later sucker, we will see about all that later." He said, shouting from across the kitchen. I place my hands on my forehead, suddenly pitying my future days ahead.
Monday came by fast enough. I stood on the threshold of the GOULDERS company, which was but an hour and thirty minutes ride from my house. I had to wake up early, something I didn't enjoy doing, just to make it early to work.
I stood admiring the view, when suddenly, I felt someone standing next to me. I looked to the right and saw a man no more than thirty years, standing next to me. I felt like God was really on my side this past month because I kept getting presents over presents, and now, one stood next to me. He was handsome, every teenage girl and possibly women in their late twenties dream.
"Nice view isn't it?" He said, looking at the company.
"Yeah," I said, totally not understanding him as I looked up at him. "Very nice."
He looked down at me and smirked and I swore my heart collapsed for a short while then and there. I found it hard to breathe and when I finally remembered how to, air filled my lungs accompanied by a very disgraceful, choking cough. I sighed internally, cursing my lack of social skills which led me to that outrageously embarrassing moment.
"Are you alright?" He looked at me amusingly with a trace of concern. I could almost hear what was going on in his mind. Great work in starting a conversation. I chided myself.
"Yeah I'm okay." I said, taking my time to study his face. He had sandy brown hair, which was tousled by the wind, very deep sea blue eyes. It's so deep, I could feel my soul drowning in it. He had a strong chin, and a long nose, with full and firm lips. I sighed. I was already jealous of who ever he was dating or will date. The suit he wore brought out the firm biceps he had. It fitted his form so perfectly, it makes one wonder just how built he was. The knowing smirk on his face brought me out of my reverie and I could already feel the blush on my face deepening.
"I'm Duke." He introduced himself, bringing forward his hand for a handshake.
"Esther." I replied, shaking his hand while willing my self to stand steady.
"Oh I know who you are." He said, surprising me. I could not believe that a hot shot like him knew me. I surmised that the news of my hiring could have spread throughout the company.
"Guess word travels fast huh." I said. He gave me a knowing smile and nodded his head.
"Welcome to the family Esther. Welcome to GOULDERS."
