“I am saying that there is no faith. People don’t carry faith with them to live and to keep living because they think their existence has no meaning.”

“What is faith?” Ed questioned. Julia glanced at him. “I have never heard of it before.”

“Faith… can mean different things. It is what drives people to have a meaningful life and it gives them courage to do what others cannot do. It is also means to have belief in things you cannot see but which are real and true.”

“How can you know something is there but you cannot see it?” Ed asked. Julia turned to him again wondering the same thing. In Ed’s eyes, she saw curiosity and a powerful desire to know.

“You have faith it is there then you shall know after the trial of your faith if it really exists or not.”

“Like other worlds,” Ed said. “I cannot see them but if I have faith that they are really around us then they truly exist? Then if after I have faith I shall know? But how can I know?” Julian smiled. Ed could felt he could trust this man. Trust every word he said although they sounded insane and impossible. Julia- shook her head. How could Ed really fall for this man’s words?

“I… don’t think I could believe that.” She said. “I mean… it’s impossible!” Ed and Julian looked at her.

“Nothing is impossible,” Julian said. “Not when there is God.” Julia looked at him strangely.

“God?” She asked. “Why are you mentioning these strange words?” Julia hung her head and clenched her fists in her lap. What was God? Faith? These words don’t exist!

            “Who is God?” Ed asked.

“He is our creator; the all-powerful being that created the universe and the worlds and life. He is our true father and we are his children created in his image.” Julia and Ed stared at him speechless.

            The all-powerful being.

Our father.

 His children

Who is this man and where is he from? Julia thought. How can he know these things? She asked. She clenched her fists tighter. Can we really believe him?

“God,” Ed repeated and imagined a glowing man dressed in white. “Then what is our purpose? If we are from… God, then what is our purpose?”

“Sir, what are you telling these kids? Now if you don’t get out in five seconds I will have to kick you out,” Sara said as she appeared near the table holding two bowls in her hands. She was staring at him angrily and in warning to get him to move away or else. Julian looked at her, sighed and stood up. He put his hat back on his head and left the table.

“Wait!” Ed exclaimed.

“Here are your Bawlke sticks,” Sara interrupted and set them down on the table. Julia watched Ed in surprise when he stood up, practically hitting his leg against the table and moving it a couple inches creating a screeching noise along the floor. He chased after Julian.

“Ed!” Julia called after him.

“Don’t listen to men like that,” Sara told her while watching the young man walk out of the restaurant. “Forget everything he said. He’s only a fool for speaking nonsense.” Julia only sat there in silence with thoughts running through her mind. Everything about faith, God, and other worlds just seemed impossible. She felt her chest clench again and she clutched her shirt with her hand. Impossible.
