We did not choose

Only the monstrous anger of the guns

Or the demented choirs of wailing shells.

I have slipped the surly bonds

And no one will worry a bit.

We were young on laughter-silvered wings

High in the sunlit silence.

Nothing much to lose,

The tenderness of patient minds,

and hearts at peace.

You have not dreamed,

I've chased the shouting wind on footless halls of air.

While with silent dreams happy as her day,

Turn my face to the light,

And you need not show that you mind.

People will always be delirious, burning blue

To live and shame the land, blest by suns of home,

A pulse in the eternal mind

Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-bye.

Here dead we lie.
