just in case, i love you {or five times tony and peter didn't say "i love you" out loud, and one time they did}

When he first heard the phrase used the way the Parkers used it, other things Tony had noticed about Peter suddenly made sense.

The way Peter would call him, half hysterical in the middle of the night after dreaming that Tony had left for a mission or a business trip and not told him and Tony would talk him down or, when it was bad enough that Peter couldn't calm down, Tony would find himself flying across the city in stealth mode to get to his kid. The way Peter would panic if May or Ned or MJ didn't pick up the first time he called. How the vigilante was self-sacrificial to a fault and dead set on sending Tony to an early grave every time he dove into traffic to save someone's dog or to rescue a stolen purse. How Peter latched on to whoever was closest to him when he was sleeping, like he was terrified that they would disappear while he was unconscious. The way the teen acted almost touch starved, brushing against Tony in the workshop like he would drown if he didn't, both of them ignoring that it was entirely impractical for Peter to be almost in Tony's lap as the genius worked on whatever Pepper had sent him to accomplish that week.

Peter was terrified of the prospect of the people he loved dying while he could do nothing to stop their demise.

Tony wished desperately that he couldn't relate.

----------------------------------------------

If Tony never heard the words "Accords" or "responsibility to the greater good" or "just a quick clarification" again it would still be too soon. He had been in meetings for what felt like forever, pouring over the same words over and over again, trying to achieve some sort of agreement between over one hundred different countries while also protecting the rights of the individuals discussed in the documents. They still had more to discuss, but after four days of near constant meetings they had at least agreed upon the need for a break to refresh and rejuvenate. Tony was so ready to be back in his own living space, he even considered taking the suit but nixed that thought quickly when Pepper seemed to read his mind and raised a disapproving eyebrow.

So, here he was, sat in the most comfortable seats to probably exist in aircraft, on a state of the art private jet and still feeling on edge and like they were moving through molasses due to his impatience to be home. Tony couldn't put a finger on why he felt so anxious, normally the flight back was spent unwinding away from prying eyes, but something was preventing him from doing so, he just couldn't finger what. He pulled out his personal phone, suddenly realizing he hadn't checked it in a good while.

Tony was met with a series of increasingly frantic texts from one Peter Parker and his heart sunk into his stomach.

Hey dad are we still on for lab day?
