I froze at the sound of the deep voice behind me. Shit. It was all over.
"Put your hands up now! Step away from the door now, or I will shoot!" I could feel his warm breath on my neck and his icy glare digging into my skull. I slowly turned around to face him, butterflies fluttering in my stomach. More sweat beaded on my temple, and this time not from the exercise.
"HANDS UP!" he yelled again. I sighed and raised my hands. It was then that I noticed my hands were shaking. He was easily two times the size of me. I was only 5'2 and 110 pounds.
"Now, what were you doing trying to open the exit?"
My brain seemed to stop working for a split second. My mouth opened, but no words came out.
"Are you deaf? I asked why were you trying to open the exit!"
"Ummm, I... I just... just mistook it for my dorm." The guard rolled his eyes. I knew I wouldn't have tricked him, but those words just came out of my mouth. I was never good at lying.
What was he going to do to me?
"Do you really think I'm that stupid? Let's get you to the principal, young lady, then you'll see what real consequences are."
My heart sank. I had hoped for this opportunity at an escape for more than a year and now it slipped through my fingers. Fiery rage bubbled inside me. Rage for this guard. Rage for the principal. Anger for whoever ran this stupid prison and government. I even felt anger for my own mother and father. I wouldn't be in the mess I was in if not for my mother and father.
"Wipe that stupid look off your face! You knew the consequences of not being in your room two minutes after the alarm went off and trying to sneak out of the building! Now, I'm going to search your pockets for weapons. If you make any moves, I will shoot you!"
He leaned down, but never broke my gaze. I glared at him, and I thought I saw a hint of fear in his eyes, but I could have been imagining it. His eyes bored into mine and I couldn't look away. They were so brown that they were almost black.
"Now, slowly flip your pockets inside out. No sudden movements!"
My hands were shaking as they moved down into my pockets. The guard would surely not like that something was in my pocket, even though it was harmless. I slipped my hands into my pockets and pinched the fabric lining. I pulled it out all the way. I saw my ring fall out and bounce on the stone floor. As soon as the sound of metal against stone reached his ears, his eyes widened.
The guard instantly turned and focused on the ring on the floor. I took this moment of distraction and slammed my knee into his jaw. His head snapped back and he fell onto the ground, unconscious. In that split second I hit him, I saw the look of terror on his face, but I couldn't do anything about it. Now was my time to escape, and I had to go now. Suddenly, I heard a distant noise. I strained to hear it, and I realized it was footsteps. More guards! My stomach made a flip as I faced the door. It was now or never. Once again, I placed my hand on the cool metal of the doorknob, but this time I twisted right away. As the cool Alaskan air hit me, I heard shouts from down the hallway.
"Hey! Step away from that door! Listen to us! We are the guards! Don't you step out that door!"
But my foot stepped over the threshold.
The guards were getting closer and they continued to yell at me.
"Do not step out that door! We will find you and there will be consequences! You won't last a day out there on your own!"
I knew they were right, but I took one last breath and urged my stomach to stop flipping. Then, I took off at a run into the wilderness.
I should've exercised more in my free time.
