The thestral Death sniffed at Blaise. He reached out and petted him, taking his eyes off of Tarra. He laughed. The breathless sound harmonized with the shrills of the thestrals. He gave her an amused, haughty smile. Tarra bit the inside of her cheek. He looked at her like she was a toddler and she was most definitely not a toddler.

"Do you honestly think my mother would get away with murdering three of her husbands? Tarra, you're smart, but not quite as smart as me if you believe-"

"Stop it and don't lie to me. Just answer my question."

Blaise observed her. Her hair fell in soft, glossy waves, dirt-smudged her chin, and tears gathered in her green eyes.

"How do you know that I'm lying? You know nothing of my mother. You know nothing of me or the wizarding world."

Tarra tried to take a deep breath, but a short, gasping sound overtook it. Her fingers twitched. She flinched when War nudged her hand.

"I just know, okay. Now, please just tell me you're not going to kill me."

"And will you just know if I lied this time around?"

Tarra huffed and said, "Of course not. I'm not a lie detector."

Blaise tried to follow her logic. The confusion must have shown on his face because she said,

"It will just make me feel better if you say it out loud... either way."

Silence draped the clearing as a flock of birds flew overhead. The thestrals gave an excited shrill and took off. They chased after the birds and devoured any that couldn't get away. This startled Tarra.

She looked at them in disbelief, "They're carnivores!"

Blaise watched her. Despite being above average in the weight category, there was something delicate, soft, and almost something pleasant about her.

"I solemnly swear I'm not going to kill you," he muttered.

Her eyes settled on him. Annoyance furled inside. If she made him say it again, Merlin-

She jerked her head in recognition and settled on a fallen log. She picked at the damp bark.

"I've been having dreams but they're not really dreams. Dreams aren't real but these are... I swear to God that they're real."

She looked at Blaise. Determination set her lips but desperation for confirmation sent tears to her eyes.

Blaise sat on the log at an awkwardly far distance from her.

"I saw your mother-" She continued.

Blaise stared at her.

"-I recognized her from the wand shop. She... she..."
