Wat's POV

The forest floor felt cool and soft beneath my paws as I ran. It was easier to trace him when I was in my wolf form.

He's near , sensed my wolf. He grew excited as the familiar scent that drove us to a frenzy hit us faintly.

It was the smell of the first rain on parched earth, with the smoky strains of pine and juniper, the crisp freshness of a misty morning and the afternotes of jasmine blooming under a harvest moon.

My wolf sped like the wind to reach that rare tract of land that was neither ours nor theirs, a forgotten field that lay like a peaceful haven amidst the chaos of our colliding worlds.

It was high in the evergreen covered mountains, a sudden grassy clearing, hemmed in by rocky cliffs, opening out to a sheer vertical drop.

On one side of it lay the forests that were werewolf territory. On the other side, the mountains and valleys belonged to the vampires.

The sun was setting, the golden hued rays lighting my way. I shifted into my human form once I reached the narrow path that led into the cliffs where our safe haven lay ensconced.

His scent was strong enough to pervade my heightened senses even in my human form. I sniffed eagerly, my heart racing in anticipation.

I pulled on the clothes I carried, and made my way further up the mountain on foot. I did not want to leave my wolf's scent for my pack to trace.

*

For centuries, werewolves and vampires had fought for power and control of the lands.

Though we were immortal, the war had claimed many lives on both sides, and made us extremely territorial.

An uneasy truce had lain between our races for the last fifty years or so, with rules defined by the Council of Alphas and the Coven Elders.

There would be no coordinated attacks on and by either side without proof of provocation.

Trespassing and cross-territory incursions were punishable by death for individuals, without counter-retaliation by the affected side.

Intermingling between the races was strictly prohibited.

As Alpha of my pack, I was charged with enforcing these rules for those under my charge.

My Alpha blood ran hotter than the other werewolves, my senses were keener and more refined, my size, strength and reflexes were unmatched.

I was born a leader, the protector of my pack. I was trained to be a warrior and a vampire hunter.

And yet, I had broken a rule almost as soon as it was set.

I reached the rocky cliff face and followed the path that opened into the field. The sun was just under the horizon now, and the sky had turned a deep purple. Stars glittered in the twilight canvas.

A gust blew sharply from the open cliff face before me. My eyes grew wide with arousal at the smell that enveloped my very being.

He stood with his back to me, facing the open sky at the far end, where the mountain dropped vertically. His cloak fluttered behind him on the strong wind.

I wanted to stay and watch him for a while, memorize every moment of our all too rare rendezvous.

But I couldn't hold myself back. It had been too long since I'd seen him or held him.

I ran and hugged him from behind, circling my arms around his waist as I buried my face in his neck.

"I'm here, my love" I whispered.
