Dean POV
Hi, my name is Dean Winchester and I have a brother, his name is Adam. When I was much younger, there was a fire and my mom died. Mom's death snapped something inside of him and he ended up becoming an abusive and neglectful father. Dad went out late at night and drank his feelings away. Lord knows what he did when he was out there, feeling the high. One day after a long period of time, he just came home with a family. Apparently, he had a son named Adam, we've been together ever since. Now here we are in our own world, Dad's gone missing. There's been talk going around about letting people into the real world. Adam and I thought we might go check it out. Maybe, just maybe, they'll have room for us. They've been asking specifically for siblings. Can you imagine that? The real world.
Today, Adam and I are going to head out to the plaza. We thought we might go get some clothes, pack a duffel bag. Everyone dreams about the real world, whether dreaming means nightmares or not is up to the person. If anyone deserves to go there, it is Adam. Adam is one hell of a kid, he sure loves baseball and is constantly talking about all the cool things he can do with his life. I wish I was as put together as him sometimes. Adam says that the real world has more people, jobs, homes, and things we couldn't even imagine.
Right now, we aren't in the real world. They tried to make it seem like it though, realistically, we are in a false land. We are located in the sky, some of us have invisible little towns, others located on giant clouds that their technology couldn't dream of reaching. Although life here is good, it's not as great as their world down there. Sure, our technology is much better, our food doesn't affect our weight, and we don't have to work far too hard to get fit. However, in my opinion, the real world is better, stronger, tougher, closer even. They have to work for everything we can get by the simple push of a button. They have to work to stay fit, they have to work to stay on average weight, they have to work for all of it. I admire that about them, how resilient and strong they are.
People up here claim that they couldn't even dream of beating us if we ever went to war. Up here, people talk like we are better than them. We are no different, we are human, we just have a lot of advanced and developed technology. We think we are stronger, I think we are weaker. While we have all of our technology, we aren't close as a community and without technology I doubt most people would be able to run a mile.
Dad taught us to be strong and not to depend on the technology up here for support. I've grown up my whole life without using far more technology than the real worlders. I've never had the largest interest for all that anyways. Most people believe it's strange that I enjoy working for what I have. If I want to stay fit and healthy, I don't use technology like others do. Instead, I run, I lift weights - which by the way are extremely hard to find nowadays - and tires, I play football, and so much more. People up here don't really find a need, a lust, to do things for themselves here. Though it's not just as simple as a push of a button doing all the work for you, I don't believe it's as accomplishing as working hard and earning it.
Here, we can build our homes however we want. People simply go into a machine that has access to their mind space and start building. Whatever they imagine, the machines provide. Let us say the person doesn't like the wall they made on one side of the house, they take it down in their mind space and the bots do the same. Of course, you could build a home yourself, however, it's not as time efficient as it may be to use technology. Dad, Adam, and myself built our own house, Sam left for another town. He said he wanted to expand his knowledge and reach higher points. Of course, we let him go, yet it still hurt.
Sammy is a great brother, he always has and always will be my little brother. It warms my heart that he got to leave and find the life he deserves. Then again, it also breaks my heart that he had to leave me to do so. I always thought it would be Sammy and I against the world. It's how it was, how it always used to be and how I still wished it could be. Sam's got brains to take on, anyone, I think he would make for a fantastic legal career. He says he's still figuring himself out and all that but I believe that deep down inside, he knows that he's got the brains for the job and the hunger for it too. He knows better than anyone else how to do the job and that will always be something that I admire of him.
This world that I live in right now, though not the best, doesn't mean it's the worst either. Considering we have great technology, this also means the food is much better. For example, if you wanted to have broccoli for lunch, you just push a button and you've got it. Here's the catch, the broccoli normally doesn't taste like normal broccoli, it's designed to meet the standards of your taste buds and what they enjoy. This means, you don't get stuck not eating vegetables because you believe they taste back, now everything tastes good. There are many things about my home that I hate, this was not one of those things.
The people in the real world don't know about us up here, I believe it was supposed to be that way. Things have always been peaceful up here, everyone would rather not risk so much as toying with the idea of letting them know about our presence in the sky. Many things come from new land, peace is normally not one of those things. No matter what, if there is land that is divided and not shared amongst everyone, there will be war. There is almost always bloodshed and violence. Most believe that they are juvenile and vicious, Dad always taught us that it wasn't as bad as everyone made it seem. I'm not exactly sure how Dad knows so much about the real world but he always had stories to tell.
"Dean?" Adam said, picking up his jacket.
"I'm listening, ask away," I said, sending a big smile his way.
"Do you think we will make it? To the real world," Adam said, hope in his eyes.
"Of course," I said, patting his head as I walked past him to grab my wallet.
"Alright, are you ready to go?" Adam asked me.
"Never readier," I stuck my tongue out, holding the door open for Adam.
"Alright, lets go," Adam said, a determined look on his face.
"Lets go," I repeated, muttering the words under my breath.
Adam walked past me and out the door, I watched him stride confidently before gaining my own confidence and closing the door behind me. I pulled out my keys and jammed them in the key sloth, twisting the keys and locking the door. We walked all the way to the plaza which was only a couple miles away. The big and bright signs lit up the place as people conversed and moved around. Adam and I took a breath before continuing to walk, the place's beauty had never ceased to amaze us. Soon, we were in the middle of the shopping area, looking around trying to find the right store. A dim lit store caught my eye, as I peered closer I noticed some duffle bags and flannel for sale. I grabbed Adam's arm and dragged him to the store, he stumbled behind, grumbling as I pulled him.
"Where are we going?" Adam huffed.
"To get some bags. Where else are we going to store our damn stuff?" I rolled my eyes.
"I guess you're right," Adam sighed.
We stopped at the dangy old store, opening the door and setting off a little bell. The clerk looked up at us, a surprised look on his face that soon changed into a bright smile. He waved at the two of us and we returned the gesture before he returned to reading a magazine. The magazine said something about a show that had a gay ship go canon during the elections. I took in a breath, relaxing with the familiar scent of leather and beer. I looked around at the small store as I observed the shelves stocked up with duffle bags, suitcases, sage, herbs, crystals, knives, flannels, and various other things I could not name. I walked around, my attention focused on a green duffle bag. It was big but looked easy to maintain, easy to manage. I saw Adam walk past me out of the corner of my eye and turned my head to spot him looking at a regular black duffle bag. He turned to look at me and nodded his head, acknowledging me. I did the same before turning my attention back to the duffel bag. I picked it up, enjoying the feel and surprised at how light it was for sure a well made and sturdy bag. I threw the strap around my shoulder before lifting my head up to see all the flannel. A smirk formed on my face as I walked over, picking up a few flannels that were my size and some for Adam. I turned my head to the right to see some solid color button ups, I walked over and grabbed a few for myself and did the same for him. I grabbed two pairs of new, clean, durable boots, one for myself and another for the kid.
It wasn't long before Adam tapped on my shoulder, letting me know he was ready to pay and go. I grabbed his duffle bag filled with things and walked over to the man at the desk. I knocked on the counter three times before finally retrieving his attention. He slipped his head phones off his ears and put his magazine down, looking at me with a confused face.
"Hello," I gave the man a kind smile, "I would like to purchase all of this."
"Sure thing," he pulled out a keyboard and began typing the calculations before coming up with a total, "I feel like I know you from somewhere. Have we met before?"
"Nope, I feel like I would've remembered you." I responded.
"Hmm, alright. Your total is going to be fifty six dollars and forty two cents," he said.
I handed him my source of money and was given a receipt shortly after, "I hope you have a nice day!"
"As I you," I responded.
Adam and I left the store, I handed him his duffel bag and shoved his clothes in there as well. I smiled at my younger brother, wishing Sammy was here too. I reminded myself that Sam had a happier life and was much better off now, following his heart and doing what he believed was right for him. I wrapped my arm around Adam's shoulder and began walking back home, ready to go over our lists of needs before the long day that was ahead of us for tomorrow. Though most dreaded the real world, Adam and I have always talked about the day we would get such an opportunity. Dad always told us that if we were ever given an opportunity we should go before anyone could change their minds. That's exactly what we were going to do.
"Adam, are you ready for what's to come?" I asked him, unsure of the future that awaited us.
"Dean, stop stressing. We can't be sure of the future but whatever it may be, we will be there together, till the end," Adam reassured me.
I smiled thankful to have at least one of my brothers with me to support me and give me support when I needed it the most. This is something that is very important to me and I would hate to miss out on such an opportunity just because I was too stressed out or talked myself out of it. I had to do this, for myself, for dad, for Sammy, for Adam, but most importantly, for me. I've always been so caught up on others that I forgot about myself and I think it's just about time I did one thing for myself. I smiled, finally ready for this ride ahead.
