CHIEF Jim Hopper's eyes seemed to stare right through Alex's soul.
Just sitting in his presence as he held himself with that critical, serious, and firm look in his eyes made Alex feel as though she had committed a crime. He was intimidating, for sure, since he had at one point in one been a cop in the big city before moving back to his small hometown of Hawkins. Now, he almost just looked bored on a day-to-day basis because all he ever heard were the same, simple, boring cases that never held much excitement. Alex wondered why he even came back.
"Alright, let's get started," Hopper grunted, looking almost displeased with having to be in their presence. "Joyce Byers gave you four as a list of people who were the last to be in contact with Will. One at a time, is there anything you four can tell us abo —,"
All at once, as if none of them listened to a word the Chief said except to give them the go to talk, the three boys began talking over one another, lost in their own sentences. None of them seemed to notice that not one of them was fully being heard. Only fragments of what each boy was saying could be made out in the commotion. Alex, on the other hand, almost recoiled a bit. She was almost embarrassed at the fact that she had nothing to contribute to the conversation, it felt like, and it created a lump that began to swell in her throat despite her efforts to swallow it.
Alex couldn't understand much of what any of Will's three friends were saying, she only caught one or two words that seemed to be common with all three of them and stuck out. The biggest one she could make out sounded like "milk worm" or something, at first, making Alex raise an eyebrow until it was repeated again. Mirkwood. And although that was in fact a name she understood in reference, she didn't understand what the creepy, evil forest from The Hobbit had to do with anything involving Will. It seemed such a random and abstract fact to bring up now in a time like this.
It didn't take long for Hopper to quickly grow tired of three responses at once, though. He soon cut them off. "Hey, hey! One at a time!" He snapped. "You-" he jabbed a finger at Mike Wheeler, "You said he takes what?"
"Mirkwood," Mike said.
Hopper quirked up one brow. "Mirkwood?" He repeated in a quizzical tone. Mike nodded, and Hopper turned to face his Deputy. "Do you know where that is?"
The Deputy shook his head. "Can't say I've heard of it. That sounds made up to me."
"The place is real, it's where Cornwallis and Kerley meet," Mike chimed back in. "It's just the name that's made up. Mirkwood; that's what we call it, anyways."
