Zelk pulled in to the Denny's parking lot, happy to have Spifey with him. The beaver boy offered to pay for the food, as Zelk needed something to cheer him up. As the two got out of the car and headed toward the infamous breakfast restaurant, Spifey grabbed Zelk's hand.
"What are you doing?"
"Taking you on a date," Spifey smirked. Zelk flicked his ear to signify that he was not amused. The pair continued walking, Zelk with a noticeable blush.
"Good morning," a waitress greeted as they walked in the door. "Just you two, or are there more of you?"
"Just us," Zelk answered, not wanting Spifey to make fake couple comments to embarrass him.
"Right this way, then," the waitress smiled, leading them to a table for two. "I must say, you two look cute together."
"Why, than-"
"O-oh, we're not together together," Zelk interrupted. He knew Spifey was not going to be the one to correct their host's assumption.
"Ah, sorry," she apologized, flustered by her mistake. "I-I'll go get the menus."
"Thanks," Spifey called after her. "Why did you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Correct her. She's clearly embarrassed now. You could have just let her believe we were a couple."
"It's not a big deal," Zelk responded. "Plus, I know you. You'd embarrass the crap out of me and use the 'she thinks we're a couple' thing as an excuse."
"An excuse to kiss you, maybe."
"Okay, are you two dating or not?" The waitress had come back.
"No, he just gets a kick out of teasing me."
"Yes, he's just too much of a tsundere to admit it." Zelk glared at Spifey when he said that.
"It's one or the other," the waitress, who's nametag read Natalie, was getting fed up at this point. "So, which is it?"
"Fine," Spifey gave in, seeing Zelk's if you say we're a couple, I'ma leave the restaurant stare. "I just like to fake-flirt with him because he gets super flustered, and I think it's cute."
"I think that's called a crush?" Natalie asked
"Don't tell him that!" Spifey pointed at Zelk, who just wanted his food at this point.
"Spifey, can we just eat?" Zelk whined.
"Right, sorry," Spifey said, surprisingly not pressing the issue further. "Uh, I'll take the pancake puppies (I kid you not, I did not make up these names.) for now. I never finish when I get full meals. Zelky?"
"Don't call me that," Zelk said. "I'll have the Grand Slam Slugger with the hashbrowns."
"Alright, most people order drinks to start, but I guess you know what you want! I'll get the orders in for ya!"
"Thank you!"
"Well, you're hungry, aren't you?"
"And what if I am?" Zelk gave Spifey a questioning look. "Does that bother you?"
"No! I- I didn't mean it to come out as- as an attack," Spifey sputtered. "I just- well, these guys always seem to give a lot of food in a single serving. I've always had leftovers I didn't eat when I'd come here. I wasn't- I wasn't trying to be mean or anything."
"It's fine," Zelk laughed. "I was just joking with you. I can't believe you fell for it!"
The bell that signaled that a customer had arrived rang, and a girl walked in.
"Just a minute," Natalie called. Zelk realized she was the only waitress working. Where is everyone else? Why is Natalie the only server in the entire building? The girl at the door was unphased, and had set her eyes on Spifey. Zelk noticed, and couldn't blame her- he was quite stunning, and could catch someone's attention, even from behind. Lucky me gets to see him from the front though- wait a minute. Why am I thinking like this? It isn't normal to think about your best friend like this! The girl, not waiting for Natalie, walked right over to their table and leaned over it, making eye contact with Spifey.
"Why, hello, cutie," she said with a low voice. "I haven't seen you around before. Maybe you'd like to go over to the Red Robin tomorrow with me so we can get to know each other? All I need is your number."
"Uh..." Spifey's mind blanked. "Wh-Who are you?"
"Kaitlyn," the girl replied with a smile. "I guess you do wanna meet up?"
"Er..." Zelk remembered that Spifey had once told him that he didn't like being hit on by strangers. It made him really uncomfortable, and he never knew what to say to decline. Knowing this, Zelk grabbed Spifey's hand that was lying on the table and intertwined their fingers.
"Sorry, ma'am," he said, looking right at Kaitlyn. "But he's with me." Spifey's already red face grew deeper at this. He wanted to see Kaityn's reaction, but his eyes were fixated on Zelk. By the look on Kaitlyn's face, Zelkam could tell that she had rarely been told "no," and that she felt entitled to any boy she wanted. She stormed out of the restaurant in a huff, not bothering with getting her food. "Jeez," Zelk commented. "Who shoved a stick up her ass?"
"Thank you," Spifey looked at Zelk shyly. He was still beet red. But why?
"Oh," Zelk noticed that he was still holding Spifey's hand. He pulled away quickly, giving an apologetic look. "Sorry."
Natalie came back with a tray, carrying Zelk and Spifey's food. "Where's Kaitlyn? She's a regular here. I saw her come in."
"She started hitting on Spif here," Zelk explained. "I could see that he was uncomfortable, so I pretended we were a couple to get her to leave us alone. I didn't think she'd leave the restaurant,) though."
"I guess she's through with Cameron, then," Natalie shrugged.- -
Spifey spent the entire car ride to Denny's chatting, and he spent the entire ride home thinking. That Kaitlyn girl- why did she hit on him? He was tall, sure, but Zelk was much more stunning than himself. He had light brown hair that fluffed out in the most adorable way. He had a floofy tiger tail and ears that Spifey thought looked very cute. Zelk's wardrobe may be strange, but Spifey thought that it clashed in a good way. All around, Spifey thought Zelk's every feature was adorable in every way. She should have been hitting on him, reasonably. I just look like a four-eyed Average Joe. Zelk would have begged to disagree if he heard his friend's thoughts- he never thought of his looks too highly. He was short, slightly bigger than most, and was really nothing special, in his opinion. Spifey, on the other hand, was tall, had brilliant green eyes that sparkled, a well-sculpted face, and a sweetness to his voice that made it comforting to hear. Zelk thought his own voice, in contrast, was whiny and hard to listen to. It never bothered him- he could use the whiny tone to his voice to annoy people even more if they were in a voice call with him. As Zelk pulled into the driveway, he finally decided to break the silence.
"Hey, how come you've been so quiet?"
"Just... thinking, I guess," Spifey replied.
"About what?"
"What happened at Denny's," Spifey turned to face Zelk, cupping his face with his hand. "And you."
"Spifey, like I told you last week, you can count on me, bro!" Zelk tried to ignore the fact that Spifey was holding his face up as if he were about to lean in for a kiss.
"You know," Spifey admitted, not making eye contact. "I wouldn't ask you out, but if you asked me, I'd find it pretty hard to say no."
"Oh, stop," Zelk giggled, purring in amusement while pulling away from Spifey's hand. "Let's go in." Spifey got out, looking at Zelk confused. Is he thick? I mean, he's thicc, but he can't be that clueless. In reality, Zelk had gotten the hint, but he chalked it up to fake flirting I wish he wouldn't. He's making it harder to stop admiring him all the time.
Wait a damn minute-
