Pain is really an abstract concept. Some feel it distantly, give it momentary attention, and usually they feel only their own. Some, however, feel it in its raw, unadulterated form. They are never free from it, their own and others. It is a familiar feeling, one that never really leaves. They feel it every day, every hour, every minute, every second. They greet it with bitterness, as one does an enemy with whom they have shared countless wars.
So thought Alex as she sat at her 911 operator job, with it meagre salary and endless emotional baggage. She let out a long- suffering sigh at the nigh on deafening buzz of activity around her. Today had been a busy day, with a flood of calls from the start. Her hand traced over the design of flowy skirt that she had been sketching and planning to make. The work, however, had hindered her progress, so that she was left with only a skirt pattern and no preperation whatsoever. A heavy left her once again, expelling all air as she slumped onto hard plastic.
"Why the long face, Alex?", said her cubicle neighbor Ada, a particularly optimistic specimen, peeking over the partition separating them.
"Just some calls, one of them was child abuse and it's just been preying on my mind since then." Alex replied, shuddering at the memory of the little boys' terrified voice, and the even more horrifying banging in the background."Aw, honey, I'll buy you some hot chocolate and then you head home straight away to relax. Fortunately, theres only an hour left." Ada chirped cheerfully, bouncing onto her feet.
"Thanks Ada! You're a life saver." Alex called gratefully after her retreating back, recieving a wave in return.
Alex turned back to her drab desk covered with sweet wrappers with considerably uplifted spirits. Of course, it was at that moment that a loud ring pierced her ears. Picking up the reciever with a resigned air,
"911, what's your emergency?...."
