Davina's pov
I made a promise. To myself, to my mom, and to my country. To protect those that couldn't protect themselves. But standing here looking at my reflection in the mirror I can't help but think where it all went wrong, because the woman I see staring back at me is a stranger.
After getting ready for my first day at the BAU I can't help but be a little nervous. A new unit means a new team, which also means more people to be acquainted with. This should be easy for me now, I've left and joined multiple units in the last 5 years. So why do I still get nervous?
Thankfully the drive to the BAU isn't too far from my apartment, which I specifically leased for that reason.
Ok Davina, you can do this. Just put one foot in front of the other
Pushing through the doors into the BAU, a weird feeling that I've never felt brushed over me. It was almost calming in a way. I shake it off and head to the correct floor.
Oh god, no turning back now
Entering another set of glass doors I take a moment to get a look at my surroundings. Desks, phones ringing from all directions, people walking past me at a fast pace. Well, I'm definitely not in Iraq anymore.
''Hi, I'm Derek Morgan. You look a little lost" a handsome tanned skin man says shaking me out of my thoughts as he puts out his hand
"Hi, I'm sorry I'm Davina Kasey. I'm looking for Section chief Aaron Hotchner's office." I shake his hand and give a small smile
"Right up those stairs at the top is his office" he points to a door and I quickly thank him before heading to the door.
I deliver two sharp knocks to the thick wood and wait for a response. Which doesn't even take 2 seconds before I hear a deep "Come in".
I push open the door and was not expecting to see what I did. There sat a tall man with dark brown hair and broad shoulders. I didn't see his face until he looked up from his paper, but when I did it was like all the air inside my lungs vanished. I was completely sucked into his deep brown eyes that say and hold so much.
"You must be agent Kasey, I'm SSA unit chief Aaron Hotchner, please have a seat."He shakes my hand and motions for me to sit down
I look around his office real quick trying to see if I can pick up on anything about him. His desk and bookshelf are relatively organized, marksmen placks and trophies, and one picture of him and a little boy. Easily a son. I quickly move my eyes back to him and put on a blank stare.
"It says here you served 5 years in Iraq?" he questions with a raised brow not looking away from my file. I can tell by the look in his eyes he's wondering why I was only there for 5 years but luckily I had that removed from my file a long time ago
"Yes sir, I was deployed directly after boot camp and stayed there until was discharged."
He stays quiet and continues to skim over everything while I play with my hands, It's been a stupid nervous tick I've had since I was little. I really need to stop doing it.
"It also says you did 6 years in an undercover CIA program and 3 years in the counter-terrorism unit here at the FBI." he says as both of his eyebrows shoot up in what I can only imagine to be shock or awe.
I let out a breath as I look down at my hands "Yes sir that is correct."
He glances back up at me and narrows his eyes as if trying to read me. It won't work though, after years in the marines and undercover I've had to become an expert and not showing micro-expressions.
"May I ask why you would want to leave your position in counter-terrorism?" he requested
Fuck, I knew this was gonna happen. Just lie Davina, it's not like he 's going to figure it out.
"Just a change of pace and scenery I guess."
He lets out a light chuckle and the tiniest smile graces his lips "Well I hate to say it but the scenery isn't much better for us over here either."
"I am prepared for this job sir I promise you."
He stares at me for a minute obviously studying me trying to gather any information he could possibly get. But what I don't think he expects is for me to be doing the same thing. His hands are folded to showing that he is in charge and serious. Shoulders slightly raised due to obvious stress from his position as unit chief. And even though he has a still steaming cup of coffee on his desk which I could only imagine not to be his first cup today, he still has slight bags under his eyes from the lack of sleep. And yet something about his eyes are screaming out to me and I can't put my finger on it.
He clears his throat which brings me out of my thoughts "Well Agent Kasey, welcome to the BAU. I can't quite estimate when our next case is going to be-" He's interrupted by a knock on his door
The door opens and a slim blonde pops her head through the door. "Sorry to interrupt, but we have a case." she says as she holds up a file
"Thank you JJ, gather the team please." Mr.Hotchner says and nods to the blonde that I know now to be named JJ. She nods slightly and leaves.
"Well Agent Kasey I hope you have your go-bag because you start today."
