"Bzzzz bzzzz" Marie's rhinestone covered phone vibrated on her pearl white antique vanity. She was going to lunch with her friends. Being wealthy and popular, she often had lunch dates. She was meeting Meghan and Alice at the country club. Meghan's father owned a shoe business called kendo shoes. Her mother was a lawyer, who often represented Marie's mother. Meghan had short red hair. She was very tall. She wanted to become a doctor. Alice lived with her mother. Her father left after he had accidentally gotten Alice's 16 year old mother pregnant. Her mother was a co-designer at Bernadette-chique.
Marie was going to tell them about her move. She knew they would support her. Today she wore a pink blouse with a pair of black high waisted shorts. Her hair was put up into a high pony tail. As she drove down the road, she thought about what it might be like to be "un-perfect". No more caviar, she thought to herself. She wondered what she would eat. She wondered what Nina ate. Baked beans? Probably. She pulled up to her usual parking spot at the country club when it occurred to her. What if Tony was there? It was too late now. She'd just have to avoid him.
......................"COCKROACHES?" Screamed Meghan in disgust.
"I knew something was up when you ordered the egg salad sandwich." Sighed Alice.
"COCKROACHES?" Meghan screamed again, this time a bit quieter but with just as much disbelief.
"What about Tony?" Asked Alice, ignoring the confused and disgusted Meghan.
Marie looked back at the table she had shared with Tony which sat lonely and sad in the corner. She turned and stared at her sandwich, her eyes close to tears.
"Oh..." Said Alice softly. She understood.
"Cockroaches?" Said Meghan, this time in a regular yet disgusted voice.
"So... You support me. Right?" Asked Marie.
"Cockroaches." said Meghan trying to accept the idea.
"Marie." Said Alice. "What about your parents? What about us? What about To-" she paused. "Toast?" Oops.
"Toast?" asked Marie, confused.
"Yes, toast." Confirmed Alice. "You know, they're toast is VERY different than ours."
"I like different." Said Marie in a slightly insecure way.
"What about- what about-" Alice desperately tried to think of an excuse to make her friend stay.
"Cockroaches." Said Meghan again. She just couldn't believe it.
"Yes. Thank you Meghan. Cockroaches, Marie. Those houses are crawling with cockroaches." She leaned in closer and whispered. "Those people? Cockroaches."
"Alice!" Marie snapped.
"IT'S TRUE, MARIE!" she yelled. "You don't belong there. Therefore I don't support you. Meghan?"
"C-cockroaches." She whispered. That was all she could say. And that was the last thing Marie thought she would hear her say.
"I'll take that as a no." Said Marie sadly.
Meghan nodded.
"I'm sorry Marie." Said Alice softly. "But you're acting- stupid."
"Maybe you're just too- too perfect, to understand." said Marie as she stood up, pushed in her chair and hung her purse over her shoulder. "Goodbye Meghan." She said sweetly.
"Goodby Marie. Have fun with the cockroaches." She said softly.
Marie shot Alice an evil glare. Then she turned, and walked away. Her attempt had failed. She had now completed an unnecessary step towards becoming un-perfect. Un-friending.
