Scadrial, Part 2

Arumi could almost feel the temperature drop in the parlor. Her uncle almost choked on his alchohol that he had taken a drink of right before Steris had spoken and was now coughing and thumping his chest on the couch. Waxwilliam, on the other hand was rubbing his chin thoughtfully. " niece, huh?" He said "Now that I think about it, Wayne did mention a Half-sister or something like that once."

On the couch, Wayne had recovered from his choking fist. He looked at Arumi and said "your mother is Anna?"

"Yes"

"So how is she doing?" Wayne asked awkwardly. Arumi looked down on the floor. She hadn't realized that her uncle might not have heard of her parents' death.
"She died along with my father nine years ago," Arumi said after a moment "my mother's friend Kalika took me.in and raised me."

She looked up from the floor and saw the expressions on everyone's faces. Pity. It was one that she was used to, even out in the Roughs. No one said anything for a while. Steris was the first to break the silence. She stood up from her seat next to Waxwilliam. She came to stand in front of Arumi then hugged the young woman. Judging from the others faces, she guessed that this was a rare action from Steris, who she now guessed to be Waxwilliam's wife.

They stayed like that for a moment. Steris was the first to pull away. Wiping her eyes she said "Well, Arumi, I would like you to stay with is while you're in town. That is if you're willing." She looked hopeful as she said this. Arumi nodded. "That is why I came here. I start an apprenticeship tomorrow in the city and was hoping that I could stay here." Steris looked overjoyed at Arumi's response.
"Of course!I'll have the servants prepare a room for you and to grab your trunk." She motioned to a nearby servant to do as she had said. Arumi thanked her and started to follow the servant . But the Wayne said " Arumi, come sit down! Tell us about yourself."
"Oh, no. I wouldn't want to intrude. Besides, my metalminds are still in my trunk." Arumi professed.

"Oh? What type of ferring are you?" Waxwilliam asked her. She paused, not even her parents had known about her dual feruchemal and allomantic abilities. Still, he was a lawman, and she had been taught by Kalika to always be honest with one.

"Actually, have two." She started cautiously. Wayne perked up at this. "Another twinborn? Dang Allik will be excited! What's your allomantic metal?"

Arumi didn't know who this Allik was, but she did know that there was no going back now. "Actually, I have two feruchemal and two allomantic abilities. I can store identity and connection as well as burn iron and steel." She looked back at their faces and saw another shared expression on the there's faces, though this one was not as familiar. Shock, then a little bit of confusion.

"Hemalurgy?" Wax said the the others. Arumi recognized the term from Kalika, though she didn't know what it meant. "What?" Wax turned to her and explained. "Hemalurgy is the forbidden metallic art. It steals an allomantic or feruchemal ability and puts it in someone else, using a spike made out of one of the sixteen metals."

Arumi shook her head. "No, I snapped after my parents death and discovered my ability while looking through their stuff. My mother was a steel and aluminum twinborn, and my father was iron and duralium." Somehow she had inherited both her parents' abilities, which had come in handy when she snapped. She had simply claimed ownership of her parents metalminds and vials from where they had lain in their trunk, the only thing she had left of them.

They all sat there talking, trying to avoid the topic of her parents' death. Arumi was very grateful for this.

Eventually Steris glanced at he clock and started. "Rusts! We're going to be late for the ball at the Bourne's if we don't leave soon!" Steris glanced at Arumi, who was still sitting on the couch next to her uncle. She had a look in her eye that made the young woman uncomfortable.

" Have you ever gone to a ball before, Arumi?"
