On the Day Before Christmas

I laid on my couch, staring up at the ceiling, like I had been doing all day. "I can't believe I blew it," I said with a sigh. "Dammit I'm so stupid. I should've just gone up to his door and knocked and told him. I had the perfect chance yesterday, I had the perfect chance for the last twelve days! But I didn't do anything. And now I've lost my one chance," I said, shooting a glance at my phone that was lying on the table. I could still call him and tell him, but I knew I was too scared to do that. I couldn't tell him to his face, there was no way I could tell him over the phone.

My phone started to ring and I lunged for it, hoping desperately it was Tommy, but it was just Eric. "Hey what's up?" I asked. "Hey! Are you coming over tonight?" he asked. "Oh, to your party? No, I don't think I'm gonna make it this year," I said sadly, going back to lying on the couch. "Oh no why not?" he asked. "I completely blew it. I didn't tell Tommy I loved him before he left so now he's gonna go back home and his ex is gonna get back with him. He's probably already there. With his ex. Making out or something," I said listlessly. "That's okay you really should still come over though, you should come over tonight I already told everyone you would and everyone's gonna want to hang out with you," he said, as if he didn't even hear what I said.

"I dunno. I'm not really feeling it." "You should come over, you need to come over, you're coming over tonight," he said, being weirdly insistent. "Okay alright damn! I'll go to the party," I grumbled. "Whatever." "Okay perfect sounds good you have to go, anyway bye Eric see you tonight at the party that you have to go to!" he said, hanging up before I could ask him what the hell was wrong with him. Heaving a sigh, I went back to staring up at the ceiling. "Whatever," I said again. As fun as Eric and Bruce's Christmas Eve parties had been in the past, I was not at all looking forward to tonight.

A few hours later, I headed off to their house anyway, making sure I had all the gifts I hadn't handed out yet. Ace gave me a wide smile as soon as he pulled open the door and I did my best to return it. "Hiya curly! You're late!" he said, giving me a hug. "Oops. Merry Christmas though," I said sheepishly. "Mhm merry Christmas!" he said, ushering me inside.

I said hello to Peter and Gene and Paul, handing them their Christmas gifts before walking into the kitchen where Bruce and Eric were in the middle of making dinner. "Hey Eric!" Bruce said, giving me a smile. "Hey Bruce, hey Eric. You guys need help with dinner?" I asked. "Nah, we've got it! You want some eggnog?" Eric asked, and I nodded. He gave Bruce a kiss and poured me a glass. "You want alcohol?" he asked, and I shrugged, biting back a sigh. "Might as well." He quickly added a splash of bourbon, handing it to me. "Merry Christmas! Oh and happy Hanukkah, right Bru?" "Mhm. I mean it ended a few days ago but sure, we'll tack it on," he said with a grin.

Shaking my head with a reluctant grin of my own, I took a sip of eggnog, leaning on the counter with a sigh. Eric walked over to me, jumping up on the counter and knocking back a shot of bourbon before pouring another half glass of alcohol and adding some eggnog. "I know you're bummed about Tommy and all that but trust me it'll be good that you came, you'll have fun tonight!" he said cheerfully before looking at his phone. "Oh wait there I gotta go get your gift for you!" he said, draining his glass and vaulting off the counter, running out of the room before I even had a chance to tell him I doubted I'd be enjoying tonight. I looked over at Bruce, giving him a smile. "How the hell are you married to him? He's so energetic!"

Bruce grinned, pulling the roast out of the oven. "It works well because I'm not super energetic, so we balance each other out. It's cute, I like how energetic he is," he said, face going a happy pink. "He is a lot of fun to hang out with," I mused, before a pair of hands covered my eyes. "Guess who, shrimp!"

My heart leapt and I whirled around, giving Tommy a wide smile. "Tommy! What are you doing here?! I thought that...I thought you went home!" I cried. He shrugged, returning my smile and ruffling my hair fondly. "I'm on my way home, I just wanted to swing by and drop off some gifts and mainly wish you a merry Christmas," he said. "I called Eric and asked if I could stop by and he said I was welcome to and he was also happy to help me surprise you a bit."

"Well I'm glad you did," I said, and he laughed, slipping an arm around my shoulders. "Me too!" he said cheerfully. "Yeah and then you decided you weren't gonna come tonight and almost ruined everything," Eric grumbled, giving me a grin anyway. "Well sorry! Thanks for convincing me not to stay home though," I said, leaning against Tommy. "Always happy to help!" Eric said with a shrug, giving me a wink, and Tommy gave me a squeeze, grabbing my hand and starting to drag me out of the room.

"Come on, I want to give you your gift," Tommy said, leading me into the hallway before drawing to a halt. "Alright just wait exactly right there, like seriously don't move from that spot. Lemme go grab your gift," he said, walking off. I waited in the hallway for him to return with whatever he had gotten me, standing where he had told me to. A minute later he was back, handing me an unsurprisingly sloppily wrapped gift. "Okay open it!" I ripped off the paper, feeling a smile spread across my face. "Aw, Tommy! That's so sweet of you!" I cried, looking at the new pair of drumsticks that I desperately needed that were wrapped in a brand new bandana.

"Here, let me put it on," he said, soft hands pushing back my hair as he swapped out my headbands, taking a step back. "Damn, looks good!" he said, before giving me a smirk, folding his arms across his chest. "Anyway, hey Eric." "What?" I asked, looking at him in confusion. "Look up." I tilted my head back, looking at the ceiling. My eyes widened, face immediately burning a deep red. "Oh is that...is that mistletoe?" I asked. In response, he leaned forward and kissed me.

My eyes widened even more and I froze for a second before melting into the kiss, wrapping my arms around his neck as his encircled my waist. He practically lifted me off my feet, kissing me and spinning me around before at last letting go. "Once I'm home I'm taking you on a date, alright?" he said with a wink. I let out a stunned laugh, giving him a smile. "Oh s-so then...then you...you love me?" I asked, and he nodded, kissing me quickly. "Very much so. I love you! I love you a whole damn lot!" he said, and I darted forward, throwing my arms around him.

Laughing, he hugged me back, running a hand through my hair. "Damn you have the prettiest eyes, you know that?" he murmured, lifting my face toward his before shaking his head. "But yeah. Took me awhile to realize it, but oh yeah. After twelve absolutely perfect dates, how could I not love you?" "Aw Tom," I murmured, melting into the embrace. "Sorry it took me so long. I-I actually meant to tell you yesterday, when we were on my doorstep, but I got cold feet so I had to find a way to tell you tonight, I couldn't wait until I got back. I've really loved all the dates you took me on and I'm gonna use my three weeks at home to plan the perfect date for you once I'm back," he said.

I nodded, leaning against him, perfectly content to be held in his arms. "I'm looking forward to it." He gave me a kiss, reluctantly letting me go. "Me too. But I do have to head out, I told my parents I'd be there at around 10 and if I don't leave now I'll be late." Letting out a sigh, I gave his hand a squeeze and dropped it. "Fine, fine. Have a safe trip then!" He kissed me on the forehead, walking with me toward the door.

"Well Merry Christmas," he said softly. I gave him one last kiss, relishing the feel of his soft lips against mine. "Merry Christmas to you too!" He ruffled my hair again, giving me a wave before walking to his car. I watched him drive off with a sigh, unable to stop smiling, heart fluttering and all warm and fuzzy inside.

"Merry Christmas."
