Chapter Nine

The sun came up, and Ashleigh woke up relatively early. By nine o’clock she was awake and downstairs in the kitchen making herself a pot of coffee. Wynter was still asleep in Rosalyn’s parent’s room, and Arabella was asleep in her own room while the guys slept in the guest room.

The house had taken on its own cold feel in general, and everything was quiet, except for the sounds she made. Pressing the button, she let the coffee machine run.

Next, she began to automatically pull out eggs and bacon. Without thinking much, she began to cook breakfast. This was normally one of her jobs in her house, and luckily, it was one of her favorites.

“Morning,” Everett greeted suddenly. Ashleigh jumped, accidently dropping the egg in her hand. “Oh, I’m sorry, didn’t mean to scare you.”

She looked down at the splattered mess on the ground, withholding a sigh. “It’s fine. Do you want coffee?” she asked as she began to clean it up.

“Yes, please,” he answered, grinning. She quickly finished cleaning up the floor and grabbed two mugs. Filling both up, she passed one to him and grabbed the sugar and creamer.

“You seem to be in an awfully good mood today,” she commented.

“I mean, aren’t you excited?” he asked, sounding very eager. It stung a little bit that he was so concerned for Rosalyn, but she brushed it off. Thinking like that was ridiculous. “You should be more excited, you just found out you’re a princess.”

She laughed a little at that. “But I don’t have any singing birds or mice to help me with my chores,” she complained jokingly. He laughed loudly.

“What’re we talking about?” Baylor asked, joining the conversation as he entered the room.

“I’m a princess,” she tried to tell the newcomer with a straight face, but burst out laughing after only a few seconds.

Everett glanced over at her, a smile forming on his face. Ashleigh was pretty when she smiled, he thought. It made the corners of her eyes scrunch up as she grinned, and he could see a light in them she only had when she laughed.

The sun shined off her blonde curls as she hopped up onto the counter, swinging her legs back and forth. “Alright, I’ll take your word for it,” Baylor said, chuckling and shaking his head. Everett snapped out of it and turned back to the other guy.

“Did you want coffee?” he asked. Baylor nodded, and Everett stood up, but Ashleigh beat him to it.

“I’ve got it!” she said, grabbing a mug. Everett sat back down, a little upset with the fact that she seemed to like Baylor so much.

“Make that two,” Wynter groggily said as she entered as well. She stretched then pulled the blanket she carried closer to her, rubbing her eyes.

“Someone didn’t sleep well,” Everett observed.

“No, and neither could I with her kicking in her sleep like she does,” Ashleigh teased, causing Wynter to smack her arm half-heartedly before she walked back out of the room. “Wynter’s not a morning person.”

“I could tell that much,” Baylor said, laughing again.

Ashleigh went back to cooking, and Baylor sat down beside Everett at the table. Both boys quietly drank their coffee.
