Third p.o.v
'Have I been afflicted by dark magic?' Luna thought to herself. There aren't many ways to regain ones youth without dabbling in the dark arts. Of course there's the philosophers stone but that was destroyed wasn't it?
The idea of being infected with dark magic didn't bother her as much as it would anyone else. It's not like she infected herself so she couldn't be blamed.
The Hokage watched the girl gaze at her small hands in wonder. He couldn't help but think that there was more to her than meets the eye.
"Do you have a floo system I could use? My father doesn't have a direct line but I'm sure it would be okay if I went to Mrs. Weasely's or even the ministry." Luna focused her gaze on the Hokage.
He blinked once. Twice. Thrice. "I'm sorry to disappoint but we do not have a 'foo' system."
Luna moved to sit on the floor. Her legs were feeling wheezy. "It's okay, I'm sure I'll find a way home eventually. I always do."
Iruka who had been silent for the duration of the conversation gave a worried grunt. The girl was too calm. What if she was injured and shock was just the surface damage? Something about her wasn't right and he grew more concerned as time went on.
Sarutobi glanced at Iruka. He made a motion to one of the anbu that was hiding in the ceiling. In an instant the anbu appeared next to Luna.
Luna didn't startle at the sight of the masked man's sudden appearence but gave him a curious gaze before saying, "You must like dogs."
Kakashi tilted his head towards her but did nothing else.
"Dog-san, I'm assigning you the position of being Lovegood-san's temporary guard. You will escort her to the shinobi medical ward and stand watch until further notice. I'll have one of the Yamanaka's meet you there."
Kakashi didn't let his eyes stray from the girl even as the Hokage spoke. He got a weird feeling from her and refused to let his guard down.
And of course, to prove his point the girl started to lightly stretch her cheeks as if they were the most fascinating thing ever created. Pulling and tugging the skin like - well - a toddler.
"I wonder, will my baby teeth fall out again? I could make a necklace this time around."
Kakashi cringed at the idea, "please don't."
She shrugged before Kakashi grabbed hold of her arm and teleported the two to the shinobi medical ward.
Luna coughed as the smoke dispersed, revealing the location change. They were in a hospital room furnished with nothing more than a sterile bed and desk.
Kakashi took it upon himself to lean against the wall and observe Luna. A thousand thoughts plagued his mind pertaining to the girl.
A majority of them revolved around the possibility of her being a spy. During the war, villages would plant shinobi children in enemy territory for long-term information gathering. She was old enough but hardly trained from what little he observed.
"Does everyone here know wandless magic? I wanted to learn but the portraits warned me not to without a proper teacher."
Kakashi raised a brow from under his mask. It wasn't uncommon for civilians to mistake chakra as magic but the girl took it a step further by adding strange details he found hard not to connect to the shinobi career.
He could have dismissed her knowledge thinking she was just a well-informed civilian, it wasn't unheard of, but she was too on the nose about the intent-based power of spiritual energy.
Perhaps she had been trained at a young age before being dropped from her village's academy roster? It was a common tactic used to weed out the civilian-born students.
Kakashi went through countless theories and observations about Luna before the Yamanaka made his entrance in a fit of cough-inducing smoke. Finally, there would be answers.
Luna covered her nose until the smoke cleared up. Once it was all gone she sucked in a few puffs of air.
The Yamanaka gave Luna a kind smile and introduced himself as Sen. "Lovegood-san, I was told by the Hokage that you were taken from your home before awakening here in the village. Is that true?"
Luna hummed, "I fell asleep in my bed and woke up in the wood brush. I think it was a dream wobbler, they're mischievous little buggers."
The Yamanaka's eyes darted to Luna's every movement, reading her body language like a book. He didn't need to use any clan techniques with how open she was with her emotions. This was becoming one of the easiest interrogations he had ever done.
Although, her telling the truth didn't help as much as he thought it would. What was a dream wobbler? A person? An organization? A creature? A technique? Sen voiced his queries to the young girl.
Kakashi watched on in growing disbelief as the girl informed Yamanaka-san that a dream wobbler was a creature that moved children during their sleep.
"One time I fell asleep in the back yard and I woke up in my bed. Sometimes dream wobblers are nice like that. This one must not be so friendly."
Sen paused before glancing at the stick she had clasped in her hands. "I've noticed that you're very fond of that stick Lovegood-san."
Luna blinked before holding her wand out in front of her. "My wand? Mr. Ollivander made it not too long after we were freed from Malfoy Manor. It's different from my first one but it fits very well. Mr. Ollivander is a master of his craft."
Sen....had no idea how to respond to Luna's explanation. He didn't sense anything from the wooden construct but perhaps it was used for special ninjutsu techniques. After all it was a well-crafted construct. Surely it had some use.
"Can it manipulate chakra?" Kakashi pondered allowed when he noticed the Yamanka spiraling into confusion.
Luna shrugged, "maybe but I don't know what chakra is. I've only used it to practiced magic or knit."
"Magic? Ah, can you give us a demonstration?" It seemed Kakashi was leading the interrogation for the time being. The Yamanaka had no clue as to what the girl was talking about. At least Kakashi was getting somewhere by humoring the girl's strange fantasy.
Luna began to wave it in meticulous fluid motions. The two shinobi present froze as the tip glowed a shimmering silver before she spoke, "Expecto Patronum."
What happened next not only surprised the two veteran shinobi but Luna herself.
