Voice

Something was smothering me.

In my nightmare, I struggled against the force, unable to tell whether it was physical or imaginary. No matter how hard I tried to fight it, the unseen force kept fighting; strangling me; watching as I ran out of air.

Along the lines of my peripheral vision, tendrils of blackness encircled me and threatened to swallow me whole. I tried to kick out against my enemy, to lash out, to break free from its hold, but when I tried, thick metal chains emerged from the darkness and wrapped themselves around my wrists and ankles.

I was trapped.

In front of me, I saw the smoky stranger grin as its long wispy fingers tightened their grip around my neck. Choking on the smell of charred flesh and the lack of oxygen, I futilely tried to rip the fingers off my throat. The creature kept grinning sadistically, as if it was enjoying my attempts to survive.

Child

The whisper didn’t come from the creature.

Stunned, both the creature and I froze in our battle.

Child

The sound came again, and this time, I noticed that the creature’s hold on my throat had significantly loosened. The tendrils of blackness had also started to retreat.

Child

The voice sounded closer this time – clearer. It sounded eerily familiar. It wasn’t one of the voices that haunted me, that was for sure, but it sounded like someone I knew.

Slowly, the circle of darkness around me started to grow lighter and the creature released its hold on my throat. The metal chains came undone simultaneously, and I fell to the floor, gasping for precious air.

MY CHILD”

I was suddenly gripped with a mind-numbing fear as I realized that the voice was almost directly behind me. If it was scaring away the creature – the thing that had been trying to kill me not more than a minute ago – what could it do to me?

The smoky creature in front of me seemed to be gripped by the same irrational fear that I was. Suddenly, in a flash of motion, all the darkness that had previously been threatening to engulf me flew to the creature’s side.

There was a pause.

Followed by a blood-curdling cry as, red eyes gleaming, the creature rushed at me and flew into my screaming mouth.

And then I woke up, drenched in my own sweat. The scent of fear was hanging morbidly in the air.
