~With Marc~
As soon as I got to America to work for my last match in Ring of Honor, I got an interview from Inside The Ropes if I would sign with another company. I would use the English I've learned during my time to answer the question.
Interviewer: Have you decided what company do you want to sign with after your last match tonight?
Me: I'm not sure. It all depends on how the future holds for me.
Just when the interviewer was about to ask another question, Ian Ricobani came up to get me.
Ian: Marc, there's a call for you.
Me: Who's it from?
Ian: You have to answer for yourself.
He brought me to a phone booth and I answered.
Me: *Hello?
?????: It's Vito. It's about your father.
My heart dropped. Is he okay?
Me: *Is he okay?
Vito: *No. Marc. He's gone.
What? What did he say?
Me: *What do you mean he's gone?
Vito: *There was nothing we could do. He was shot in the head and killed by the Mancini Family. I'll give you as much—
I didn't wanna hear anymore. I slammed the phone onto the receiver so many times to the point that I was crying. I had my head down and trying to hold back my tears, but I couldn't.
?????: Hey, what's wrong, Marc?
Marty was coming to me, wanting to know what's going on and I had to tell him.
Me: They fuckin' whacked him! My father's been whacked!
Marty: What?
Me: He was shot through the head. Point blank!
Marty was shocked and had his hand on my shoulder. I was holding my head trying not to cry but I couldn't! I pushed the phone booth down and kicked it so many times that Marty and Flip Gordon had me calm down and help me cry it out.
~News~
Reporter #1: The father of professional wrestler Marcelo "Marc" Costanzo, Anthoni Costanzo was murdered. The 68 year old man was a consigliere in the Sicilian Mafia for more than over thirty years and never broke the Oath of Omertà.
Reporter #2: Anthoni Costanzo, the 30 year veteran in the Mafia, and the father of "Marc Costanzo" has been murdered by the other Family, the Mancini Family.
~With Marc~
I had to get back to Italy. I told Ring of Honor about the situation and they allowed me to leave.
At the funeral, I couldn't take it. The Mancini Family shot my father in the head that an open coffin wouldn't be needed. We were burying him and I didn't wanna stay. I just threw a rose at the gravesite and was leaving without saying a word.
My dad didn't want me in that life and I don't plan on hanging up my boots and retiring just for that. Vito wanted to see me before I left.
Vito: *Marc! Come here!
I walked over to him and I wanted to know what he had to say.
Vito: *Do you want to take your father's place? He didn't want you to, but I want you in it. Can you honor your father and join me?
Me: *Are you fucking kidding me? We just buried my father and you want me in that life? No! I don't want to hang up my boots just for this! I'm getting out of here.
His bodyguards stopped me and started to beat me. I was helpless. I didn't have a weapon on me. I didn't want to use a gun to kill someone.
Vito: *Bring him up.
They brought me to his eye height and pulled my face to his.
Vito: *How disappointing. I thought you would take his place. Gun.
His assistant brought a gun to him, he cocked it, pointed it to my head, and I knew, I was about to die for refusing a position in the mob.
?????: Don't pull that trigger.
Vito put down the gun and his bodyguards released me. The guy still had the gun to Vito's head and I recognized the other man next to him. That's TONY KHAN of All Elite Wrestling!
Tony: I think he's had enough. Let us take him off your hands, Vito.
Vito: Once you do, just know, this piece of shit is banned from Italy.
I'm banned from my home country?! What the fuck!
Once I was brought into the limo Tony was driven in, we went off to the airport.
Me: You're Tony Khan.
Tony: And you're Marcelo Costanzo.
We shook hands as this was an honor to meet him.
Me: What brought you to me? How'd you know about my father's funeral?
Tony: Cody sent me to ask you about signing with us.
Me: Really?
Tony: Yes. We've been watching your matches in Japan and in Ring of Honor. Even with a decade under your belt, that's impressive.
Me: Well, thank-you.
Tony: Also, Brandi, Cody's wife wants to know if you're interested in showing up on A Shot of Brandi to prove your signing?
Me: How about this, I'll finish my last match in ROH. Then, I sign, but I announce it on A Shot of Brandi.
Tony: Makes sense. I'll tell Cody about this because I know he'll be excited to hear that you're thinking about signing with us.
We got to the airport and flew to Jacksonville, Florida. When we got there in about 38 hours, Cody and Brandi were the first to see me.
Cody: You must be Marcelo Costanzo?
Me: If you want me to.
Cody: I'm Cody Runnels, this is my wife Eden.
Eden: Nice to meet you.
Me: Nice to meet you too, ma'am.
Cody: So let's talk business, shall we?
Me: If you don't mind, I just went through a death, including a beating, and it's better if I just have some time to myself.
Cody: Oh, okay. We'll give you some time. How about join us for lunch?
Me: Why not?
Cody: Okay. Let's go!
We all went to a restaurant as we talked business about AEW and Ring of Honor. Once we talked about my final match, we were able to set it up a couple months later.
Cody: Since you're gonna be signing with AEW, let me tell you a little something: this isn't WWE where we bury people like us former stars, we put them on TV only to entertain the audience. Marc, with you still suffering the loss of your father, I'm gonna let you take your time and let you gather your thoughts.
Me: Grazi, Cody.
Cody: No problem. You need all the time in the world to mourn, but make sure you come by in Jacksonville to sign the contract.
Me: I will.
A week later, I was scheduled to be on "A Shot of Brandi". Little did I know, I was going to meet someone very carino.
