Genie slumped on to the mattress closest to her, which was completely bare as her things had not yet arrived. Her head rested in her hands and her elbows on her knees as she let her mind go completely blank.

Never before had she felt so lonely, even when she was deep in the closet she still had Chloe and Bernard to help her through anything, and it was a shame she wouldn't be able to talk about this: not only during her time here in which outside communication was strictly forbidden but also during the summer, due to the ridged confidentiality agreement she had to sign when she was enrolled.

She glanced up at the wall in front of her and noticed that it was barren except for an analog clock and a single framed picture of Jesus, the kind you would find in a monastery, and chuckled. It wasn't that Genie didn't believe in God: she was quite spiritual; but rather that she didn't agree very well with those who were overly religious. They were often quite rude to people like her, and she wasn't very fond of rude people.

After staring blankly at it for a moment she realized that it was nearly curfew. She must have been zoned out longer than expected. Soon the rest of the girls in her year would be filing in, and she would be forced to interact with a bunch of brainwashed Bible-thumping baboons, which was not something she was looking forward to.

As predicted a trio came hustling into the room, rambling on about some boy that had offered one of them a piece of gum. Though trying her best to ignore them she couldn't help recognize a couple of them from the common room. One in particular.

"Oh my goodness, hi! I didn't know you were in our year!"

This girl had a chirpy voice that seemed to chip away at every once of resolve Genie had. She turned her head up to face her fully.

"Hey, it's - Athena right?" she asked drowsily.

"Righto, and this is Harmon and Mouse they-"

Athena! You know we're not supposed to go by our names! I'm SAL and this is Julie." groaned the girl to Athena's right. She had very short curly black hair that was parted at the front and black wire-rimmed circular glasses, her eyes were as dark as the floors in the lobby and her nose was red-tipped and button-shaped.

"You don't have to in here! It's perfectly fine, they can't legally have cameras in our bedroom!"

"Since when has this school ever cared about legality?" piped the girl on Athena's other side, who was much different from her friend. She had pixie cut blonde hair, green eyes, and freckles, her nose was more of a pointed shape and her teeth were incredibly white.

"Either way!" said Athena in a finalizing tone, "We're gonna be roommates!"

'I kind of assumed that from the way you all barged into the room' thought Genie, but she did not say this.

"We're trans," said the girl on the right "what are you in here for?"

The way she phrased the question made it sound almost like they were in prison, which Genie assumed was not far off from their current situation.

"Lesbian," she thought for a moment "so is this where I ask about pronouns- or"

"I'm they-them, and that shut-in-" they pointed their thumb at 'Julie' who had somehow gone to sit on the bed and crack open War and Peace without anyone noticing "is he him". They lowered their voice, "it really sucks that he's stuck in a girls dorm. I mean it sucks for me too, but in his case, it's obviously much worse." Genie nodded.

"So what names do you go by?"

"I'm Mouse, usually called Mousey, and he's Harmon, at least when there aren't any cameras around."
