HalleThe morning announcements start with Lady Sandoval listing all of those who had died in the attack. I didn't know any of them; most of them were fifth or sixth years. A few names sound familiar, like Alejandra Wilkinson and Silas Madden. Many people in the crowd burst into tears as someone's name is listed. I just stare at the ground, a blank expression on my face.
I finally pay attention when Lady Sandoval asks, "Which one of you students has lost a knife?" My head pops up and everyone looks at me.
I begin to push my way through the crowd but people move to make room for me to walk to the stage-like structure Lady Sandoval stands on.
"It's mine." I say, putting a hand on the side of the stage and swinging my body up.
"Miss Kaiser, please take better care of your things. Your mother would have been disappointed if you had lost her knife." Lady Sandoval says.
"Wait... Lady Sandoval, how would you know that my mother gave me that knife? I haven't told anyone." I look her in the eye, confused as to why she would know that.
"I... I was good friends with your mother." She bites her lip and hands me my knife. It has dried blood coating the blade and some on the handle, even though I've never had to use it. I scratch the blood off the handle with my short, stubby nails, still standing on the stage in front of everyone, and slip it in between my belt and my pants.
I hop down off the stage as Lady Sandoval speaks again. "You are all dismissed. Please proceed to training."Just as I finish instructing my squad on what we'll be doing this morning, a menial servant boy comes up to me with a note from Lady Sandoval herself.
' Halle Kaiser,
I request your presence in my office.
It is important and expect you here immediately after receiving this note.
