Chapter 3

I managed to fall asleep in the tiny room. The officer left right after he tried talking to me. I woke up briefly when a doctor came in to check my vitals, and he pronounced me perfectly healthy. I woke again, but when the officer came back to question me again, I passed out in my chair. When I came to, the doctor was back, hunched over me.

"Shock. Maybe dehydration. He'll be alright, just get the boy some water," the doctor ordered.

The officer brought a bottle of water with him when he came back to try and question me for the third time. I gulped the water down greedily.

"You are Oliver Myers, correct?"

I nodded.

He pointed to a recording device I hadn't noticed before. "You need to use your words. Again, are you Oliver Myers?"

"Yes."

"Tell me about what happened this morning."

"I walked into school with my friends and boyfriend. We were in the cafeteria. I saw someone walk in with a gun. I didn't know him. I think I've seen him before, though, just around school."

The officer interrupted me, holding up a yearbook picture. "Is this the person you saw?"

I peered at the picture. It shows a young man, maybe Lewis's age. He has blonde curly hair and is grinning widely. The smile doesn't quite reach his eyes. "I think so."

"That is Scott Landon. We found his body in the cafeteria. Do you remember shooting him?"

"I shot him?"

The officer sighed. "We have video evidence of you shooting him."
"I - I don't remember. I don't remember anything. Can I talk to my friends?"

"No. Why did you have a gun?"

"I don't remember!" I realized I was shouting, standing up with my hands flat on the table.

"Were you planning to shoot someone?"

I sank back into the chair. "I don't know."

The officer got up and left the room. I sat stiffly in the chair, arms by my sides.

I waited silently for what seemed like hours. The officer walked back into the room.

"Come with me."
"Where are we going?"
He pulled me up by my arm. I followed him into another room, almost identical to the first except for two things. First, there were three chairs around the table. Second, one of the chairs was filled by Jamie. He looked up and relief flashed in his eyes.

"Oliver!" Jamie started to stand, but the officer gave him a stare. The officer guided me to one of the other chairs.

"Tell us what you told the other officer," the officer commanded Jamie.

Jamie looked down. "Um, I was talking with Nicholas after we saw on the news that you were being held for questioning," he looked at me. "Nicholas said 'I wonder if this is because of what happened when we were-' and then he stopped. I tried to ask him what he meant, but he wouldn't tell me. He told me to not tell anyone, but I just wanna help you, Oliver," he looked back down.

The officer gave me a cold stare. "What was he talking about?"

"I don't know."

The officer pulled me up again and led me back to the first room. He left me for only a minute this time before he came back. "We're bringing in your friend Nicholas."
