Chapter 10

Both lawyers had made their closing statements, so I waited at home for the results. I could barely do anything, so I sat on the couch, waiting for the phone call that could change my life. Nicholas had come over with Jamie, but none of us were really wanting to talk. I didn't know if Nicholas believed me about either the gun or Lewis raping me. After his last remark on the stand, I really wasn't sure if he was on my side or not.

"Nicholas?" I asked quietly.

"What?" he didn't sound mad, but he obviously wasn't very happy.

"Do you believe me?"

"About what?"

"All of it."

Nicholas shook his head. "I don't know. I want to, but..."

"Nicholas, I swear to God, I'm telling the truth," I spoke softly.

He shook his head. "I don't know. I need some air." He got up and walked out the front door. Jamie and I both watched him walk away.

"Jamie?" I asked, sounding like a small child.

"I believe you." He moved to sit next to me on the couch. "Is it okay if I hug you?"

"Yeah," I answered.

He wrapped his arms around me. After just a second, I pushed him away.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his eyes full of concern.

"I just remembered. When Lewis - when he died, he said he was sorry. I didn't know why, but now..."

"Wow. That's really tough."

"Yeah," I exhaled. We both sat in silence for a moment. My cell phone rang from behind me. I jolted into action, grabbing the phone. "Hello?"

"It's your lawyer. The judge has his verdict. We need you to come back to court right away," she hung up.

I looked at Jamie with wide eyes. "We have to go. The judge made his decision."

"What about Nicholas?" he asked.

"He left. He can find out later."
