It was a rare occasion for Major Rajveer Singh Shikhawat to be at his family home in Delhi for more than a fleeting visit. This time, however, circumstances were different. After years of relentless deployments and back-to-back missions, Rajveer had finally been transferred to the Delhi headquarters. His superiors had made the decision for him, insisting that he needed a more stable and less strenuous posting—at least for the next few years. He had spent nearly a decade throwing himself into the most dangerous assignments, always volunteering for high-risk operations since the day he graduated from the military academy. Perhaps it was their way of ensuring he didn't burn himself out.
But Rajveer wasn't sure how he felt about this change. It had been nine years since he had spent more than three consecutive days at home, and now, with his posting in the same city as his family, he was expected—rather, forced—to stay in his family home. While he loved his family, he had grown accustomed to the solitude and discipline of living alone. Over the years, that quiet independence had become his comfort zone, and returning to a house bustling with parents, siblings, cousins, and endless chatter felt overwhelming. He knew his family meant well, but he also knew himself—being under the same roof with all of them for an extended period was going to test his patience in ways even the battlefield never had.
Fortunately, Rajveer's father was the Chief of the Army, and his brother-in-law, Captain Naveen, also served in the military. This meant they had at least some understanding of what he was going through. They recognized that adjusting to a non-combat routine after years of active missions wouldn't be easy for him. However, explaining his need for solitude to his mother and sisters was a different challenge altogether. They struggled to grasp why he often preferred to be left alone or why, despite being posted in the same city, he was so adamant about living separately.
His younger brother, Rakshit, on the other hand, had no such concerns. He was simply thrilled that his elder brother was finally home and available to hang out more often.
That morning, as Rajveer descended the stairs for breakfast, he was lost in his thoughts. He had an appointment with a real estate agent later that afternoon, and the mere thought of breaking this news to his mother filled him with unease. He could already picture the storm of emotions his mother and sisters would unleash upon hearing his decision. His jaw tightened instinctively as he stepped into the dining room, bracing himself for their reactions.
"You look like you're suffering from constipation," Naveen remarked, eyeing Rajveer with a mix of curiosity and amusement.
"My situation is pretty much the same as constipation," Rajveer replied, casting his brother-in-law a pointed look.
Naveen immediately caught on and smirked knowingly as he continued feeding his two-year-old son, Aarush, who was seated beside him.
Rajveer came from a large and accomplished family. He had two sisters, Radhika and Ragini, and a younger brother, Rakshit. Radhika was a well-respected gynecologist, while Ragini worked as a manager at their mother's company, Shikhawat Empire. Rakshit, the youngest of the siblings, was currently pursuing a BBA in college. Their mother, Rajnandini Shikhawat, was not just the matriarch of their household but also the formidable CEO and Founder of Shikhawat Empire, a business empire she had built from the ground up.
