Chapter Eleven

Mustafa thought he knew the corner she took. It wasn't like she sprinted, it was more like a fast walk done by someone overwhelmed with worry. He wasn't certain which direction she took. Did she take the path through the cornfields? Perhaps she went through the back route to Mama's house instead of the main road? It started drizzling, soft showers of rain that could gradually soak his clothes.
He raced back to get his car which was parked in front of Mama Jami's. Baba Kassim was waiting by the gate.
"Yaya ne, what happened? Baba asked him as he jumped into his car ready to drive off.
"It was Mufeeda, she must have heard something from our conversation. I have to look for her," Mustafa answered panting as he explained.
Baba was about to say something, but Mustafa had already reversed and made a turn towards Foreign Affairs Estate.
"What's going on?"
Mama Jamila asked coming out of the kitchen with a confused look on her face.
"What will one not do for the sake of love?" he asked as his eyes followed the trail of Mustafa's car.

Mustafa tried to understand why Mufeeda was upset, he felt he could understand the humiliation she feels about her lack of identity as a result of not knowing her father and being distant from her mother made things worse. "I will be everything you need Mufeeda," he swore under his breath. He searched in all the possible places. He checked Mama's house, the school, Two Stones almost everywhere. He knew she had to be somewhere within the area. "She couldn't have gone far. I think I know just where to find her. Finding Mufeeda can't be difficult if you know her."

Mufeeda needed to be alone. She needed the alone moments to sort her head and the little voice that kept telling her things. She leaned against the large stone rock that had been her place of solace ever since she arrived Taruwa. She was tired of running and hiding. All her life she had always have to avoid questions about her dad. Now she had overheard Baba Kassim telling Mustafa to find out about her parents.
"When it is discovered that my father was some sort of criminal and even my mother and her family had to avoid talking about him, will Mustafa want to be with me, will he still want to make me his wife?" she asked herself silently.

Walk away now, before you suffer a broken heart. This thing can't work. You know he will eventually reject you.
The voice in her head was talking.

She felt her headache, she placed her head on her laps hugging her feet. Tears came from a place of pain, rejection and fear.

"Allahumma AntasSalaam!" She prayed.

Mufeeda didn't hear the steps that walked towards her quietly. Neither did she notice that someone sat against the rock at the opposite end. All she heard was his deep voice, the voice that made her heart race and do several flips at the same time.

"Salaam...."

She looked around through eyes blurry from too much crying and couldn't see him but she could feel his presence.

How did he know I came here?

Don't say anything to him.

The voice in her head was warning her.

"My flower girl....the one who stole my heartbeat and made it hers..... from what do you run my lady?"

"Mufeeda.....I know you are probably hurt and confused about what you heard Baba Kassim and I discuss," he said gently.

Don't say anything!

But he's killing me softly with his words....!

"You need to stop running, Mufeeda.....you don't have to spend the rest of your life running. That is why I am determined to know the truth, we need to know what the facts are."
