All she had done was roll over to hit the snooze on her alarm. And where had she ended up? On the floor.
Just her luck.
Katherine Ride groaned as she stood up, rubbing her shoulder. She shot a glare at her phone, still buzzing relentlessly. "I get that it's your job to wake me up, but could you be less annoying about it?" she muttered, picking it up and stopping the alarm.
It was still early in the morning; the sun was barely beginning to rise. The rest of the house was mostly quiet, but Katherine could hear her parents talking in the kitchen. She looked at the calendar above her bed, pinned open to the month of April, and squinted blearily at the date.
Birthdate at U.A? What the hell does that mean?
Katherine yawned and ruffled her wings slightly, reading the writing again.
Oh, first day at U.A. That makes more sense.
She snapped her fingers and teleported to her hallway bathroom. As she began brushing her teeth, still yawning, her father—Hizashi Yamada (a.k.a. the Pro Hero Present Mic)—knocked on the doorframe and smiled at her. "Hey, kiddo!" he greeted cheerfully. "Ready for your first day of high school?"
Katherine turned to him, confused. The two stared at each other for a moment, Mic watching as the gears in her head turned, before Katherine gasped and teleported back into her bedroom, the toothbrush previously in her hand falling onto the counter.
"I told you she'd forget," a voice called to Mic from the kitchen.
Katherine eagerly opened her closet and grabbed her uniform: a white button-up shirt, dark blue-green pants, a red tie, and...
"Dad!" Katherine yelled, fumbling with her tie. "Oh, por amor a...where is my jacket?"
"I couldn't get the wing slits in!" he yelled back. "Sorry!"
She sighed and knelt down to tie the laces on her combat boots. "That's fine! I'll just tie it around my waist!"
Once she had her uniform on, Katherine moved back to the bathroom to take care of her hair. "Okay, leaving it down isn't practical...," she mumbled as she brushed it. "I should definitely pull it back, but how? Braided, half-up..."
She grabbed a hair tie from the end of her brush. "Or I could just go with a ponytail."
Katherine stared at her ash-blonde hair in the mirror and brushed it back with her hand, biting the inside of her cheek. Steel-blue eyes stared back at her, urging her to make a decision.
Yeah. I'll just go with the ponytail.
After tying her hair back, Katherine turned to see herself from all angles. The scar over her left eye stood out more prominently than ever in the lighting, but she made no move to try and cover it up. Once she decided she looked presentable enough, she grinned and finger-gunned at her reflection. "That is one sexy mutant," she complimented.
"...Uh, Katherine? Are you gonna come get breakfast? And why are you calling yourself sexy?"
"Coming!" she shouted.
Okay, new rule. Never do that around people.
Katherine walked into the kitchen and saw her backpack sitting on the dining table. Inside were her school materials, her schedule, and some honey sticks and energy bars to keep her metabolism up during the school day. "Aw, did one of you pack those for me?" she asked, looking between her parents.
Mic came over with a plate of waffles and kissed her on the forehead. "Of course! After all, you're going off to high school!" He pouted and set the waffles down. "And leaving the two of us alone."
