Onyx awoke from his bed stretching his long, black body, admiring his scales as they glistened in the early morning sun. He then turned to the right and saw his friend Opal still sound asleep in her bed. Not wanting to wake her, he slowly and carefully got up and exited the den they shared with 20 other young dragons.
He blinked as he stepped out into the early morning sun. Onyx headed for the courtyard where every dragon was hanging out before they headed of to their jobs, or to school. He spotted his favorite adult dragon, Angelite, buying nectar from the market.
"Angelite!" He called, waving to him.
"Onyx!" Angelite called back, walking over to him.
"How's it going this morning?"
"Well, my construction crew and I just got what is quite possibly the biggest order of the century."
"Dont keep me in suspence, what is it!" Onyx demanded.
"A new palace, at the edge of the glade," Angelite whispered.
"But no one is allowed that close to the edge unless they're hunters or sanctioned by the royal family," Onyx breathed as he stared at the ring of trees creating a barrier around the glade all the dragons called home.
"Apparently it's an extra percaution to make sure that that rule is followed by everyone," he responded.
"Why now though? Why not when the rule was created? Every dragon I know wouldn't dream of dissobaying the royal family," Onyx asked.
"I don't know. I only build, I don't ask questions." Right at that moment, the bell sounded. Sending the adult dragons to work and the dragonets off to school.
Onyx spread his wings and flew off, not wanting to be late, again. He soared through the door and landed in his seat just as the teacher, Scale, walked in. He turned to stare at Onyx with a smile.
"I see you have decided to show up on time today Onyx," he remarked.
"I didn't want detention sir," Onyx replied.
Scale chuckled slightly then began writing on the chalkboard at the front of the room. Rather than pay attention, Onyx began thinking about the rest of his day. Scale was by far his favorite teacher. He was one of the few who remembered what it was like to be a kid. None of his other teachers were bad however, they just expected their students to not have any kind of social life and only focus on school. Yeah, like that would happen, Onyx chuckled to himself.
"Onyx, you paying attention back there?" Scale asked. Only then did he realize that everyone was staring at him.
"Uh, yes sir. Just got distracted is all," he answered. Hoping his teacher bought it.
"Ok, just dont let it happen again," was all Scale said before turning back to the front of the room.
Onyx breathed a sigh of relief. Glad he didn't get in trouble for daydreaming in class. With that though, he began paying attention. He didn't want to get caught again, and this time get in trouble.
The rest of the day passed in a blur, the only thing he could think about being the new palace being built. When school finally ended for the day, he grabbed his bag and flew out of that cramped classroom as fast as his wings could carry him. He headed to the edge of the glade, where he knew the construction site to be. The other builders knew him so no one was surprised when he suddenly turned up.
Onyx would often hang around after school, sometimes he even helped with the work. This time however, he walked up to Angelite and asked, "Any new information on why the royal family sanctioned this?"
"No, and I doubt we will. They aren't exactly known to just turn up and shout their motives for all to hear," Angelite responded with what sounded like bitterness in his voice. Onyx didn't have long to dwell on it before he heard another bell, calling the dragonets to dinner.
"Bye Angelite," Onyx called before flying away.
Just to clarify relative age, Onyx would be around 14 to 15 in human years. Angelite would be around 25.
