Gus sighed as he closed his journal. His pen was abandoned beside him. "Hard work evens the playing field." He said to himself. It was a pitiful excuse. Gus found school hard, not just the extended curriculum or the workload. But the people, he had no friends. He was alone. Years younger than the other students. Some days... no most days he wished he wasn't gifted.
He looked out the window and saw older students walk past on the ground below. Tall and confident, they grouped together like flies. He felt lonely.Gus gathered his things, sliding pens and loose paper into his bag. Books, journal and notebooks falling into the gaping hole. He dragged his feet to his locker, his face downcast. He lined his locker with books, each one a different color. Ranging from magic to history. He knew everything, nothing excited him anymore.
Gus walked into the library not wanting to eat alone in the cafeteria. He looked over the books bored. Then he heard a voice."Half a witch." Sneered a pink haired senior as she played with a Grudgy ball. Gus peered over the books and tried to read her jersey.
"Enough Boscha. I don't want her to cry on my stuff." Said another voice. Gus tip toed and read the second voices jersey.
"Blight?" He whispered in horror. His little head bobbed between the books.
"Who's there? Who said that?" The pink haired girl yelled as she spun around.
Gus hid behind the books, hoping his height would give him the advantage. He put up a shaky finger and made an illusion of himself. His double made faces at the Grudgby players.
Angry the two made their way to the double, following it around the corner. Gus stood up and ran to the half witch and grabbed her hand.
"Follow me!" He said quickly, dragging her out the door.
"Hey!" Boscha yelled throwing the Grudgy ball at them. The ball was about the hit Gus but the other girl pushed him out of the way. He fell to the floor with a thud. Blood dripped onto the ground. Gus looked up and saw the half witch bleeding, her glasses broken as she bled onto the floor.
"Run!" She yelled helping him up, the two witchling's made their way to safety. Running down the halls, evading angry Grudgby players and fire balls. Eventually they hid in a classroom.
Huffing and puffing Gus struggled to catch his breath.
"Thanks." Said the half witch.
"I should be saying that! You took a fireball for me!" Gus said loudly.
"Shhh!" The half witch said pushing her hand into his face. The two smiled, then began laughing.
"Willow Park." Said the half witch extending her hand.
With a smile Gus grabbed her hand. "Gus Porter."
It was nice to have a friend...
