Kai was sent off for missions away from her classmates more than she thought. She was thinking maybe she could be near them and do the same missions as them, but then again, there was word she was being considered a promotion to special-grade, so it could be that they were trying to determine if it was a correct assessment. Plus, they were always short on manpower, so as someone with a high grade already, she was given many missions just because she was able. Was refusing even an option?

..... Hold on, she didn't know the answer. Maybe she should ask Nanami about that. Get herself a break and nap for two days again, just to process, you know. When was the last time they let her sleep more than five hours?

Ack. She really needed to ask if breaks were possible. She could ask the embodiment of stress, Ijichi, right now, if he would pick up the phone.

Her flip phone rang, waiting for his response as she walked along the sidewalk in sunglasses.

He picked up as a black car stopped to her right.

"Kai-kun!!"

She froze. People turned their heads to glance over. Did he have to call her out? Actually, why was he there? Her cover could've been blown just now, and she wasn't up for selfies.

"What is it, Ijichi." She turned her head to see said man in the driver seat, his window down.

"Are you busy? If not, please come!!"

"Huh?" Already walking around, she opened the door and sat in the passenger seat. "What's up."

"Three first-years have been assigned to a special grade!"

. . .

They're alive. They're alive.

Kai, with Ijichi's words, was told that they were alive the last he saw them.

Exiting the car from in front of a detention center, it had started to rain. Parts of the building was demolished. Nobara was removed from there. And in the yard, in front of some debris, a shirtless Yuuji laid on the ground in front of Megumi, whose head was high up and facing the sky.

"Hey!!" Kai shouted, running up. "What's..."

Her feet slowed to a stop, taking in the scene.

Yuuji wasn't breathing. He had no pulse twitching in his neck or wrists. Megumi was trembling with his eyes hidden, but his lips set together tightly. She knew, from basically growing up with him, what his sad and troubled faces looked like.

Flipping Yuuji over on his back, she was taken aback by the dark, gaping hole in the middle of his chest.

His heart is gone.

He's not breathing.

She stood up, and touched Megumi's shoulder.

"Hey.. what happened?"

Needless to say, with the obscurity of the whole mission for kids completely unfit, and how Gojo and Kai were kept away from them for that to happen, Gojo was pissed off and was once again ready to commit murder of the higher-ups that definitely planned for his death. They wanted to kill Yuuji from the start, after all.

Kai finally didn't have a mission coming up right after finishing one. She was currently on a call with someone while standing next to a flight of stairs outside, with patched up Megumi and Nobara on the steps.

"I said I don't know, Takataka-chan."

Even with Toge, Maki, and Panda walking up, she held a hand up to stop them and walked further away, covering her other ear.
