I fall, fast. I scream as the confidence is over token with fear. I throw out my hands before I hit the ledge. I suddenly stop. The rope slack. I smile and lower myself down. I grab the runners arm and tie the harness attached to mine on him. The rope pulls up and he travels with me. As I surface people start to cheer. People murmer "how is that even possible" I smile. Once in a lifetime, I'm the hero. They hurry the man off, suddenly I dart off. My shyness taking control. I run past Jane who looks at me in awe, I sprint towards my house. I barrel inside and shut the door, breathing heavily. I lay against it and sink down to the floor, I put my face in my hands. Why did I have to do that? I don't want attention! The door shakes as Jane pounds against it.
"Let me in Annie!" She yells.
"Go away!" I shout. Her footsteps die away, suddenly I hear a window open and I bolt into the living room as Jane climbs in, she smiles weakly.
"Let me in" She laughs and I can't help but giggle.
"I got scared" I say before she can ask. "Thats why I left." She just nods.
"Alright" she moves across the room, "That was super brave. I never knew you could do that kind of stuff" She laughs to break the silence.
"Did anyone see me?" I ask, shuffling from foot to foot.
"Not your face, I think" She replies.
"Good, I don't want attention" I mumble.
"Alright" she looks at me, worry in her eyes "I'll leave you alone, call when you want to talk" and she climbs out of the window. I stand alone in the living room, hating the silence I head back into the kitchen. I look at my cereal, now bad from staying out for to long. I sigh and wash it down the drain. I loosing my appetite change into different clothes and leave the house.
Heading down the sidewalk I stare across the street at the park. It has mostly cleared out besides the few police keeping a handful of pedestrians away. Suddenly the shadow appears. It stands by the slide, watching me, I blink and its gone! I rub my eyes, am I going crazy?
I hurry down the sidewalk, keeping my eye out for the shadow. I head towards the candy store on the corner, entering I reach into my pocket and pull out a few bucks. Skimming the aisles I reach for a butter finger. I take it to the counter and drop it and a doller down. At the counter was not the usual old man but a woman. She was tall, her black hair seemed to sparkle.
"Hello" I say politely.
"Hello, young lady". She keeps her green eyes on me, searching me up and down. I stand uncomfortably, "Its just... radiating off of you" she mumbles. I stare confused.
"What?" I ask, grabbing my bar but leaving the money. She snaps out of her gaze.
"Nothing Dear, nothing" She says averting eye contact.
I quickly leave and walk farther away from my house, towards Jane's. When I come to her blue door I stand before it, thinking of what to say. I raise my hand and pound it against the door. In a matter of seconds ir opens, Jane sits in the doorway. Before she can say anything I spit.
"I'm sorry!" And I hug her. "I didn't mean to be such a jerk"
"Its fine" she pats my back then pulls away, "everyone has those moments."
"Thanks" I say, pulling my hair to the side and I glance around the porch. The shadow hasn't resurfaced. "I need to tell you something!" I grab her arm and drag her inside, I pull her up to her room and shut the door.
"Whats wrong?" She asked.
"Ok first, do you think Im crazy, like not the good crazy but like I need to get help crazy" I ask.
"No, why?" She says.
"Ok, good. Second, i've been seeing a shadow, its been following me" she looks at me confused "and then when I went to the store the clerk said something was radiating off of me" Jane looks at me and smirks, before jumping off the bed.
"Finally, my job is almost over" she mumbles and I just sit their confused.
"What job" I ask standing up.
"Oh, forgot. Well, I'm Jane. I am part of a organization that is looking for you, a girl who is a heir of Merlin. You are in grave danger and must come with me" She says blandly as if she was saying something she memorized. I just look at her confused.
"Wait? What?" I say, my heart starts to quicken.
"No time" she grabs my arm and marches me out of the door. "We need to get to the launching point"
"What are you even talking about!" I yelp, suddenly a movement catches my eye. I look and the shadow barrels towards me. I scream and Jane looks over.
"Ugh, Nimue has had too much children with enhanced magic" she steps in front if of me and pulls something out of her pocket. She throws it and a purple dust spreads around us, instead of falling towards the ground it stays in the air, creating a bubble around us. The shadow lunges and then is thrown backward. It hisses, it lunges again but the same happens. Jane ruffles through her bag and pulls out a knife, its hilt is white with carvings on it. She jumps out of the bubble and lunges at the shadow, she lands on top of it and plunges the knife into its heart. It screeches and flails around Jane yelps as she is thrown off. The shadow screams for another few seconds then vanishes. The knife lays on the asphalt and Jane scoops it up.
I stare in amazement, she looks at me weirdly.
"That. Was. Awesome!" I shriek.
"Ok.." She mutters and grabs her bag and my arm. She leads me down the street and past the candy store. The lady bolts out, her green eyes dart around.
"Cassandra!" Jane yells, "You were right about this one, we have already met one cysgod" She informs her and Cassandra looks around.
"I did say energy was radiating off of her, I don't know why you couldn't see it" She replies.
"Wait, what?" I repeat.
"Nothing" she replies. "Now come on, we need to get to the lay line" she grabs my arm but I pull away.
"What is a lay line?" I insist.
"There are magical lines across the world connecting. Where they intersect is a point where we can travel between them" Jane explains, glancing around.
"Oh" I reply.
"Now lets go" she grabs my arm and we march towards the library. Once inside ahe glances around, its empty. Suddenly a book shelf topples over and I yelp. "Go!" Jane screams pushing me to the stairs. I head up as Cassandra faces against the attacker. It was another shadow just bigger. It lunges towards her but she throws up her hands, a sonic wave spreads out and the shadow is thrown back. Cassandra throws out her hand and a ball of fire shoots out, exploding against the shadow. I stare amazed till Jane pushes me farther up. Once up I look over the balcony. The shadow still stands, around shelves start to ignite. Suddenly the human figure spreads out his arms and more shadows appear.
"Go!" Cassandra yells towards us. I notice all the light in the room, being drawn towards her as the shadows circle her.
"Not without you!" Jane yells, she then notices the light fading. "Cassandra! You can't do that, it'll kill you" she stutters.
"I said go!" She replies, particles of light start to float around her. Suddenly a large burst of light explodes across the room, and I am thrown into oblivion.
