No mother should ever consider turning their children into toads. Children are blessings, of course. No mother should ever even think about it. Not even if it's not a serious consideration. Not even if said children are driving her mad...
Esther Mikaelson, of course, would never do such a thing to her darling children. Yet, in what could have been a beautiful summer morning, had her darling sons not decided they were going to murder each other, Esther could not help but think of a spell that would give her five more minutes of peace.
She had gone out to check on her garden–and to glance longingly at the horizon–after she had sat the children's breakfast on the table. Esther tossed and turned in bed all night, her hands always searching for Mikael between the sheets. Once the first rays of sunlight pierced through the window, she gave up. There were enough chores to keep her mind occupied, after all. But after finishing her more pressing tasks, she gave in, wrapping a cloth around her shoulders, and marching outside to wait for Mikael's return.
Esther stood by the door of their small wooden house, at the northern edge of their village. Soon the others would awake and go about their own daily tasks; Esther thought tiredly. Almost a hundred Viking settlers, among three generations, working together to survive and be happier in a new world. It all was only possible because of Mikael, the former prince of Norway, the founder and unofficial Earl of their village, Lífprasir. All the villagers respected and admired him. Yet, the three surrounding villages were not so found of the mighty Destroyer, and his family...
The chilly morning wind danced around Esther's long blonde hair as she cursed her husband for his delay. She prayed for Mikael's and Elijah's safe return, even though she knew there was no reason to worry. Her husband was the best hunter in their village, and her little Elijah–who was not so little anymore–was so much like his father. She was sure he would become a skilled hunter, just like Mikael... But with beasts running around the forest and the full moon only a day away, what mother and wife would not worry?
Besides, it's not like reason could ever be strong enough to make an anxious heart worry any less. Esther had learned her lesson the hard way, with year after year of worrying for Mikael's safety in battle. Thankfully, she had her children to distract her, even if their methods for keeping Esther from worrying about Mikael were not ideal.
The thought of turning her children into toads had crossed her mind the night before, when Kol and Niklaus had fought during dinner. With Mikael away, neither of them seemed to care about holding their tongues. Of course, Esther's icy glare always made them freeze in place. But every time she turned her around, they were back at their fighting, or worse, their mischief.
Still, she had brushed off the thought then. Esther knew her boys missed their father and worried about Mikael and Elijah alone in the forest.
She scoffed, listening to her sons' talks of going out to look for their father and brother as they ate breakfast inside. All of their children always liked to think of themselves so helpful, even when their presence only made things worse.
Keeping her eyes on the horizon, she heard her boys shouting at each other. The thought of turning them into frogs was back again. This time stronger, fouled by the worry growing in her heart.
"They should've been back already." She whispered to herself, ignoring the shouting from within her house. Esther had hoped Finn and Rebekah could deal with Klaus and Kol's new dispute. Finn used to be just as well versed as Elijah in keeping the younger children in line, but as the years went by, Kol and Niklaus had defied Finn's–and later Elijah's—authority more and more. She worried about what such behavior would do to Finn's and Elijah's relationship with their younger siblings. Even though Mikael reassured her, it was normal for younger siblings to defy their older siblings. Esther worried and worried–especially about Finn and the growing distance between him and the others...
