On the opposite shore of the Chesapeake River, as he watched the lights across the dark water with his hands stuffed deep in his pockets, Hannibal Lecter began to cry.

He saw them carry her away.

They were coming.

Let them come.

A snap in the woods made him turn, his mouth twitching slightly at the corners as the dark stag came to stand beside him.

The lights continued to flash across the water as Hannibal Lecter watched in silence.

'Run, Anna,' he thought, 'run far from here.'

With a final glance at him, the Ravenstag took off into the night.

Her cries followed him into the dark when the first headlights appeared on the horizon.

It was time to flee.
