walking towards the moon-lit greenhouse dani's heart was beating so quickly inside of her that she thought it might burst out of her chest. jamie on the other hand was frantically trying to make herself look presentable.
as dani walked through the moss-covered entrance to the glass building, she knocked on the door-frame.
"hello?" she called out, glancing around at all the plants.
jamie's head popped out from behind a corner. "poppins! didn't see you walk in. make yourself right at home, it's not much but it's my lovely little corner of the world."
dani's eyes peered over the wide assortment of plants big and small, "not much? jamie, i can barely keep a tiny house plant alive. it's amazing how you take care of all of these plants and make it look so cozy."
"you haven't even seen the coziest part yet," jamie chuckled, reaching a hand out awaiting dani's grasp, "c'mere." dani accepted jamie's hand and let her lead her around the corner to a little bench with two blankets and a few pillows.
jamie sat, motioning for dani to sit next to her. "it's so cute in here." dani said once she'd positioned herself. "thanks, i took me a while to get this collection of plants. but, i think they work quite nicely."
the two sat, talking about meaningless little nothings. it seemed like minutes but before they knew it almost two hours had gone by.
looking at the gardener in the dirt-covered overalls, dani was the most content she had been in years. ever since edmund died, dani had a huge hole in her heart that she thought would never be full again. but as she got lost in the green eyes that looked right at her, she could feel that hole beginning to grow smaller and smaller. the thought of that scared dani more then she could ever describe, but she had to put that feeling aside and accept the fact that this could be the start of something extraordinary.
"listen, dani." jamie broke the small blip of silence that had erupted between the two. "i don't know how you'll react to this, but i think i'm starting to feel something for you. that thought scares the ever-loving shit outta me, but it's true."
dani's eyes widened slightly, she had to admit that she wasn't expecting jamie to be so upfront about her feelings. instead of spending time trying to scrounge the words together to describe how she felt, she instead pulled the gardener into a short kiss.
jamie couldn't help but feel a wave of relief rushing over her. pulling away from the au pair, she felt her lips curl into a smile. "shit poppins, didn't know you had that in you."
"honestly, me neither." dani chuckled, tucking a small strand of hair behind her ear. "but, i thought that might be more effective then any words that i could think to say."
"so i take it you also feel a lil' something?" jamie said, reaching out and putting a hand on dani's leg. dani just nodded, laying her hand on top of jamie's.
dani re-positioned herself to where her head was now resting upon the gardeners shoulder. and that's how she would stay for a long minute, just taking in the somehow subtle yet enticing earthy smell that emitted from jamie.
the gardener glanced down to her old, worn wrist-watch. "shit poppins, it's almost two in the goddamn mornin'!" jamie said, shocked.
dani looked down at the same watch, "i guess you're right. jesus, we've been out here for so long i barely even noticed."
jamie didn't want to move from that small couch, she wished that they could stay there in that moment for an eternity. but, real life can sometimes be unfair. "i oughta get going, i gotta be here early in the morning anyways." jamie sighed, leaning her head back onto the back of the couch.
"or, you could just, stay here? for the night at least, instead of making the drive home just to come back here in a few hours." dani suggested, looking up at jamie.
"i mean, you do make quite the offer. i don't know how i could turn you down anyways." jamie said, laughing quitely. "fine, i'll stay."
dani caught herself smiling as jamie said that, "i was hoping you'd say that. now come on, we gotta go to bed so we're not completely exhausted tomorrow." she said, reluctantly rising to her feet as she stretched her back.
jamie stood, putting the blankets back onto their rightful spots on the couch. "lead the way dani, take me to the nearest bed." jamie reached and grabbed the au pair's hand, following her across the lawn of the manor.
and like that, the two were off into the night. they walked into the building hand-in-hand, and in a few minutes the two would be in the room that dani called hers.
