"fuck." dani whispered under her breath as she dropped the cup full of water she'd planned to use to water her plant that now spilled all over the floor. jamie blinked her eyes open from her sleep, looking at the water all over the ground next to her now.
"what happened here?" she said, groggily.
"sorry, i wasn't trying to wake you. was trying to water the plant, but you see how that worked out." dani said, grabbing a towel from the corner of the room and placing it on the wet spot on the floor. "did you sleep okay?"
"i slept great. did you?" jamie said, sitting up and stretching her arms out above her.
"like a baby." dani said, when in fact she did not sleep like a baby. she slept terribly. she'd slept terribly ever since eddie had died, but she wouldn't tell jamie that.
"well, listen. i'm gonna stay at my flat tonight, i have some stuff i need to do there but i promise i'll be back here tomorrow morning before you even wake up." jamie said, brushing some stray strands of blonde hair behind dani's ear.
"pinky promise you'll be back?" dani said, sticking out her pinky. jamie intertwined her pinky with hers, "how could i say no to a face as beautiful as yours?" she leaned in to plant a small, sweet kiss on dani's soft lips.
dani frowned. "i'll miss your warmth tonight." she mumbled, sticking her bottom lip out and furrowing her brow.
jamie chuckled, "you'll survive, i promise. i'll find a way to make it up to you, poppins."
dani's cheeks flushed slightly and she inhaled sharply. "i can think of a few ideas."
"well, we'll save those for tomorrow night." jamie said, standing up out of their bed and tossing her hair up sloppily. "i'm off to take a shower, i'll see you in a bit."
as dani watched the gardener walk out of their bedroom, she let out a deep breath and turned to her dresser to pick out her apparel for the day. after nitpicking her decisions, she decided on a light pink blouse with some faded jeans, simple and easy.
walking downstairs to greet owen for the morning, dani knocked on the doorframe to the entrance to the kitchen to quietly interrupt the conversation that hannah and owen were having. "good morning guys." dani said, walking in and quickly smiling at the two sitting at the table. making her way to the coffee maker, she'd listen to owen and hannah discuss different methods of soup-making from their childhood. not necessarily the most riveting topic of conversation, but she envied them for how interesting they seemed to make it. it was almost as if conversations and discussions happened so effortlessly between the two, and they always seemed to constantly enjoy each-other's company.
moments later, the two children made their way down stairs. miles reluctantly followed his younger sister, still rubbing the sleep from his eyes. flora on the other hand had practically jogged her way across their home to say good morning to everyone downstairs. "hello everyone!" flora called as she speed-walked down the stairs.
"oh, flora and miles! good morning you two." dani turned, looking to the two children in their pajamas. "want some cereal?" she asked, pulling two bowls out of the cabinet.
"yes, please." both children almost said in unison, sitting down at the table.
dani fixed both of them a bowl, bringing it over to them and placing it in front of the two. behind her, jamie walked into the kitchen and made her way to the fridge to get some milk. her hair was still wet, but she'd gotten dressed and ready for the day.
dani faced the gardener, stopping to look at her for a moment. gosh, she's pretty. she'd think to herself as she walked to the side of the table opposite of the two children. she'd notice jamie placed her backpack next to the door, signaling that she was going to be returning to her own home tonight. dani frowned at the thought, only one night, i can last one night.
"anyone need anything from town? i'm going there today and i can pick up anything if needed." jamie said, sipping from her glass.
"oh oh oh! can you get me some new colored pencils? mine are so old and i could really use a new set." flora said, focusing her attention now to the gardener across the kitchen.
"of course, anything else?" jamie asked, glancing to the adults in the room.
"if you could pick up some sugar that would be great." owen said, adjusting his glasses.
"so, sugar and colored pencils. quite the haul." jamie chuckled, placing her now empty glass in the sink. "i'll be back here tomorrow morning, gotta grab some stuff from my flat."
"oh but jamie, we'll miss you!" flora whimpered, pouting.
"love, you can survive without me for one night. i'll be back before the sun is even up tomorrow, you'll barely notice i'm gone." jamie said to the young girl, smiling slightly.
"if you insist." flora sighed, closing her eyes momentarily.
jamie walked to dani, placing a hand on her shoulder. "promise me you'll keep good care of them, miles. seeing as you are technically the man of the house."
"i won't let you down." he said, poking his chest out to make himself look bigger.
"i knew you wouldn't, don't let all hell break loose while i'm gone. and i'll see you lot tomorrow morning."
and with that, she made her way out of the kitchen. before she reached the exit of the manor, she turned to dani and smiled, winking as she grabbed her bag and opened the door.
