Even after Evalyn had finished explaining, Dario's mind was still full of questions.

"Wait... How did... Why has..." he thought for a moment before asking "what the hell is a Keeper?"

looking as if she was about to explain, Evalyn sighed, only to be cut off by Alyra, who had said nothing the whole trip

"A keeper is like a parental figure for a skin walker. In the first few months after the... Original change... Skin walkers are fragile; they need caring, and protection. Lucias taught, cared for and protected me, and Evalyn.

As much as I hate being babied, I'd probably be dead if it weren't for him. He taught me how to fight, how to stay sane, even how to survive in the dessert with just a spoon, some duct tape and an old radio.

He taught me that I’m not a freak. Even though he started off as some random bastard who just showed up at my house on my birthday, he looked after us, and we grew to trust him fast.

At 18, I was old enough to fend for myself. So he left. That was almost a year ago, I haven't seen him since."

As she finished speaking, her voice began to slowly dim. Looking up at the rear view mirror, Evalyn could see Dario still had questions in his eyes.

She finished the conversation by informing him

“Keepers all work at the Maior Natu concilium. So, Lucias will be there. For every 5 years they spend with an adolescent skinwalker, they get 2 off to be council members at the concilium, so he won’t have a new project yet.”

A scoff came from the driver’s seat

“I hated being called a ‘project’. Way to make us freaks feel good, council.” Alyra spat with disgust; it was evident she wasn’t a big fan of the council.

“Listen,” The spite in Alyra’s voice made Dario know continuing the conversation further would be dangerous

“I woke up at 3:30 this morning, and I’m tired, so I’m going to have a nap”

]And with that, he rested his head, and shut his weary eyes, the hum of the car lulling him to sleep.
