"Hey, mom? Can I ask you something?" Eleven year old Oikawa asked as he sat on the living room couch. It was his birthday; he and his mother always watched his favorite movie after they had Oikawa's birthday dinner.
"Of course, honey, what is it?" she smiled.
"I've been thinking about this for a while now, maybe around 4 months. My questions is, what if I liked a guy, not a girl?"
His mother was dead silent as she stared him down. Her familiar smile was now miles away, and was replaced with an enraged face.
"Mom?" Oikawa asked, his voice cracking.
"What do you mean, 'What if you liked a guy?' Boys aren't allowed to like boys. It's unnatural, and disgusting."
"But mom, I can't help it... I've never really ever found a girl 'pretty' like all the guys in my class do... All the girls think that the guys are handsome, and I kind of agree with them-"
"So are you just admitting to me that you're a fag?" his mother rudely interrupted.
Oikawa was confused. "What's that?"
"Go to your room and look it up, or something. I don't care what you do, but I know that I don't want to see you for the rest of the night."
"B-but, mom, it's my birthday..."
His mother stood up from her seat on the couch and stood in front of Oikawa. A moment later, Oikawa felt a sharp pain on his right cheek. He immediately cupped his wound with his palm. Hot tears formed in his chestnut eyes. As his cheek became less and less numb, he started to feel the outline of a hand forming.
"I don't give a damn. Birthday or not, you listen to me! I said, go to your room! Now!" she screamed.
Oikawa quickly jumped up off the couch and ran up the staircase. He opened the door to his room and scurried inside, shutting the door slowly and quietly. His tears finally gave in, streaming down his flushed face.
Jumping onto his bed, he grabbed a pillow and sobbed into it. He cried until he literally couldn't produce any more tears, which felt like hours. Pulling his face out from his pillow, he saw that his tears had soaked through his pillow case. He threw his pillow back to the head of his bed. Leaning over the edge, he reached underneath his mattress and pulled out his iPad.
'Go to your room and look it up, or something.'
Opening Safari, he slowly typed the letter f...
a...
g.
Clicking search, he waited for his screen to pop up with an explanation.
Faggot- homophobic slur.
Oikawa stared at the screen, dumbfounded that his own mother had called him a slur.
"You should have kept your mouth shut," he whispered to himself.
-----
"That was the last time that she had ever hit me, but it wasn't the last time she had called me a... y'know."
Iwaizumi was hesitant to say anything at first. Whenever he was at Oikawa's house, his mom had always been so nice to Oikawa. This story had astonished him.
"I... um-"
"You don't have to say anything. It's okay," Oikawa reassured, smiling at him. Oikawa was trying to hold back tears; he had never realized how scary reliving that memory would be. "Now that we've got that out of the way, would you like me to explain what happened with Yuri and I?"
Iwaizumi slowly nodded his head as he drove through an intersection.
"Long-story-short, she asked if I had a girlfriend, I said no and explained that I'm into guys, and she called me the slur."
Iwaizumi was silent. The thought of his own girlfriend calling Oikawa that was disgusting. "Oh my god... I'm so sorry..." he didn't know what else to do except apologize.
But he was also confused.
"I don't understand how the two stories are related, other than the fact that in both stories someone called you that- that word."
Oikawa was silent for a few moments.
"I told the first story because it explains why I'm more sensitive to the word than most. I'm not even comfortable saying it. That's why I reacted the way I did when I stormed out of your house... which I never apologized for. I'm sorry for slamming the door in your face-"
"To be honest, I think I would have reacted the same way. There's no need to be sorry."
Oikawa looked at Iwaizumi, and smiled. "Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"Does this mean... does this mean that we're friends again?" Oikawa asked hopefully.
"Were we not already?" Iwaizumi asked.
They laughed together for a couple moments, until that was interrupted by the ringing of Iwaizumi's cellphone. He answered the call.
Oikawa barely heard Yuri yelling at Iwaizumi through the call.
"Okay, Okay! I'm coming home!"
He was quiet for a moment, letting Yuri speak when-
"Will you chill the fuck out? Jesus fucking christ! I'm coming home!"
Iwaizumi took the phone off of his ear, and ending the call with Yuri mid-sentence. "I'm sorry, she just really wants me to come back, so I have to drive home..."
Oikawa decided that it would be best not to say anything about Yuri. "That's okay. It was nice talking to you again, Iwa-chan."
"It's nice being friends again. I've missed you."
"I've missed you too."
Without you, life is bland.
