"You'll never beat me!" Aunt Wolla says, smirking.
"Says the woman who's gonna have to wait for the oven," I retort.
"Wha-- Hey!" Wolla yells as I race to the ovens and shove my two cookie trays in. I slam the oven shut and set the time to 01:30. My aunt and I are competing to see whose cookies will sell out faster-- and it'll probably be the batch that gets on the display first. I groan as the second oven dings, signaling that the donuts we made a couple hours ago are ready to be glazed.
"Think again, Sed!" Wolla winks jauntily and skips to the oven, trays in hand.
"Your batch may be done quick, but mine'll taste better! I hope," I say, sliding off my oven mits. Glazing is probably my favorite job in the whole baking business, but I don't have to use heat protection. My hands are pretty heat resistant, though I still need extra covering for metal and stuff. I smirk. Oven two is smoking. "Wollahsram," I say, stumbling a bit over my aunt's full name like I always do, "I believe the winner has already been decided!" I point both my thumbs at my head as I head to the glazing rack.
"I can't see why your parents ever named you 'Dessert,'" Wolla says, raising an eyebrow.
"There's a reason why it's backwards!" I call over my shoulder. My full name is Tressed, but most people call me Sed for short. I don't see why, though. It's just three syllables: "tree", "ah", and "sed". It's not like "Tchaikovsky" or "Smorgasbord" or something like that. My family has a thing for backwards things. My aunt's name, for example, is "Marshmallow" backwards, and my mom's is "Illich". I keep pointing out that that's not technically "Chili" backwards, but my mom insists that was my grandpa's intentions. I insist that her name is just Tchaikovsky's middle name, and that my dad, Peter, was meant to find her. I also think that my name should have been Tchaikovsky, so our family could be "Peter and Illich and Tchaikovsky", but my mom thinks I was too "sweet" for any other name.
Eyeroll.

Doing What's Right
FantascienzaThis is an idea from my sister (who is working with me on this). She originally wrote this as a writing project for school, but I thought more people should see it. So, I revised it and extended it, and now we're writing an entire book!
