James and Y/N met through their parents. The four of them all going to Hogwarts together and becoming best friends. So they decided it would be a great idea to get their children to be friends, but it never really worked out.

James was cool with being her friend, actually a little more cool with it than he should've, and Y/N didn't want to be around the boy at all. Her growing fear of boys rising as she grew up.

And Y/N for sure knew she never wanted to be friends with him ever since Valentines Day when they were six years old.

The both of them went to the same school and that day they had to give out candy to all of their classmates. James had a big crush on her, and decided he would simply give her all the candy he got that day.

It was recess and Y/N and her best friend were sitting on the swings on the playground. James walked up to the two of them. Y/N's hair was flowing in the wind and James didn't like how uncomfortable he felt when his stomach grew butterflies.

When she noticed the boy approaching, she instantly frowned, looking anywhere but him. She got up off the swings and her friend followed her, but before she could make a run for it James grabbed her arm and kissed her right on the lips.

He didn't know why he did it. It felt like the right thing to do when he saw her wearing a nice dress that day.

She instantly pushed him off her, and screamed. Her friend grabbed her hand and they left the boy standing there by the swings, alone. He didn't know how to react, he wanted to be mad she didn't like him, but he was optimistic that one day maybe she would reciprocate his feelings.

Y/N instantly told on him that day. He got into a lot of trouble and his parents made him write her an apology letter in the mail. Once she read it, she threw it away.

Their parents had given up on trying to make them become friends after that. James hadn't given up on trying to be her friend though. It never really worked. She always had a closer friend than him.

But once the two of them got to Hogwarts, everything changed. Maybe it was magic, but suddenly Y/N hadn't tried to run away when he tried to talk to her.

Once they became close in their second year, she regretted ever trying to not be his friend. He was a genuinely kind and funny person, he always seemed to put a smile on the girls face even when she was sad.

One day in second year the two of them were sitting out on the Courtyard. They stared off into the mountains around Hogwarts and heard the way the wind gently blew through the air.

"You know what we should do?" He asked, still looking off into the distance. "What?" He turned back to look at her. "Let's say, if we're not married when we're... 25... we marry each other."

She looked at him dead in the face. "Are you just saying this because I didn't kiss you back when we were six?" "No, no! I don't trust older me to be married by 25 and you're my best friend." "Are you saying I won't have someone in love with me by 25."

James groaned. "No! I don't! It was just a thought. I just think it would be nice to marry my best friend don't you think?" "...Yeah, I guess so."

"So... what do you say L/N? You promise?" He held out his pinky finger, waiting for her. She rolled her eyes and sighed, locking her pinky around his. "Sure." "No, you have to say that you promise." "Alright, alright. I promise." She exaggerated the 'promise' and he gave her a big smile.

"You won't regret this Y/N."

As the two of them grew older, their friendship didn't fade, which was a little surprising. It seemed that he was the only exception to her growing dislike of boys. Her friends made fun of her for it, especially after she told them about the promise.
