TRIGGER WARNING: THIS CHAPTER MENTIONS BLOOD ABUSE AND VIOLENCE
Taylor - Tuesday, July 28th
I had been here for three hours, the waiters came by and asked the same question that had been running through my head, "Where's your friend miss?" I wish I knew.
I tried calling her, nothing. I called her sister, nothing. I called Robert for god's sake, nothing. She wasn't here no one knew where she was and I didn't know what to do. Eventually, I decided to order some wine, maybe Este would show up saying something about how she was held back at work, which made sense considering she was a Times journalist.
I decided to leave the restaurant and go by her office. I stepped through the glass doors and walked across the marble floor it was quiet and no one was there save me and the security guard. Walking in the elevator, I pressed the button with Este's floor. Just as the doors were about to close, a young blonde woman jumped in.
"Sorry," she mutter in between breathes, "Times?" Her accent was marked with British tones, but it was quite American. The elevator shot upwards, indicating the floors we were passing.
One, two, three.
"My friend works there, I was stopping by to see if she was still in."
"Oh, I work there too, well I started a few months ago after I graduated."
Four, five, six.
"Congrats!"
"Thank you."
Seven, eight, nine.
"I'm Yves" she said extending her hand.
Ten, eleven, twelve.
"Taylor," I said and shook her hand, just before the elevator's ding went off signaling we had arrived. The elevator stopped and the doors separated revealing bustling office on floor thirteen. Yves ran out and went to deliver papers to someone unknown to me, I went in search of Este.
On my way I ran into Mike a colleague of Este's, "Hey Mike have you seen Este?"
"No, she didn't come in today, I'm a little worried she didn't even call in sick."
"Oh, I'll go by her apartment and check thanks Mike."
The traffic was a nightmare, New York traffic, great. I could hear my heart pounding and the horns of the cars. The lights were blaring and people were yelling on the sidewalks. I could hear the siren of a police car ahead of me. The light stubbornly stayed red when my phone rang.
"Taylor?" Danielle was sobbing, I could hear it through the phone.
"What's going on Danielle? What happened?" I tried to stay calm but Danielle didn't really call me that often considering she lived in Boston with Alana.
"Este's missing, I'm here with Alana we're coming to New York, we figured you didn't know because we heard from Robert," Danielle said this all through choked sobs and Alana's voice trying to calm her down. I couldn't say anything at all I was shocked, the light turned green but I couldn't even move I could hear the drivers behind me yelling and the car horns roaring at me. I gathered enough strength to move my car to the side of the road and park, I was still on the phone with Danielle and Alana.
"What time will you be here?" I asked them ready to pick them up from the airport.
This time Alana answered, "we'll be at JFK in three hours."
"I'll meet you there," I hung up and started driving towards JFK. I called Joe to fill him in.
"Taylor, I'm coming with you, where are you?"
"Three blocks away from the apartment, near that café."
"Alright, hang on, I'll be there in ten minutes maybe less."
Este - Monday, July 27th
I was doing this now, I came home from work and made sure everything was ready, it would seem like a normal dinner, but then I'd tell him. I put the divorce papers in a pretty gift box along with a pen and the places he would need to sign marked with those SIGN HERE labels. I wasn't going to go through the lying denying yelling please take me back we're over bullshit, we would divorce on my terms, then he could have this stupid apartment and his stupid mistress, and his stupid life. But I was going to have his stupid company, then I'd sell it off to someone and I could live freely no burdens nothing, just money and me. There was nothing else he could do to make me change my mind.
He came home sat down to eat dinner and afterwards I presented him with his beautiful gift and announced the wonderful news that I knew about his dirty little secret and I had made my peace with it and my decision of what would come next. But instead of playing his role and saying the lines in the script I had written in my head, he was filled with rage.
"YOU FUCKING BITCH, HOW DARE YOU DIVORCE ME???" His voice boomed around the apartment. Rage.
"HOW DARE I? WHAT THE FUCK ROBERT YOU'RE THE ONE WHO FUCKING CHEATED NOW SIGN THE DAMN PAPERS!" I would not take any of his bullshit.
"I'M NOT SIGNING SHIT, YOU'RE GETTING OUT OF MY LIFE WITHOUT A SINGLE PENNY YOU BITCH!" Rage.
"OH BECAUSE I'M THE ONE WHO MADE THE FUCKING MISTAKE??? I'M THE ONE WHO CHEATED RIGHT?? YEA CUS IM THE ONE–" he pushed me to the floor and wrapped his fingers around my neck in one swift move and he squeezed, hard, really fucking hard. I couldn't breathe, I was gasping, trying to get his hand off mine trying to get away from him, but he persisted. Everytime I resist his hold around my throat got stronger and tighter. I tried to kick him away but it was no use. Literally none.
Robert always had a quick temper, always. And he had the biggest fucking ego that ever existed. Never a good combination for an entitled rich boy.
"You're not getting anything do you here me? NOTHING!" He said and he let go of me. That was the first time he had ever touched me like that. I was breathing hard looking right at him and he was looking at his hands. My back was against the kitchen counter my legs leaning away from him, my arms hugging my torso, then scrambled further away from him and saw the knives on the counter. I grabbed it but he saw me.
He charged at me and the next thing I knew everything was gone.
Robert - Monday, July 27th
I did it. I did it. I did it I did it.
Shit. Fuck. How could I?
I saw the knife in her hand the next thing I knew she was bleeding and there was blood, everywhere. Everywhere. I was standing a pool of red, the air smelled like iron. I couldn't breathe.
I did it. I was gasping for breathe. I did it.
