A new year and still the same old school saying "Hello". At least now I can drive here on my own. On my way in I walk past the 'popular kids' or as other people may know them 'the assholes that rule the school ground'. I just shake my head, when I see some girls swooning over them behind the next corner. They will just get used and their hearts broken like all the other girls before them. I am glad my brother warned me from these kind of people before I got here, it saved me from a lot of drama.
"Allison!" I turn around at the sound of my name and see Emily, one of my best friends, running up to me. A big smile spreads on my face and I open my arms to give her a big hug. "I missed you, Em." "Missed you too, Ally." She practically shouts into my ear. I scrunch my face and punch her shoulder lightly. "Keep a little quiet, would you?"
"For my first lesson I've got geography, and you?" I ask Emily while slamming my locker shut. "You are still taking that boring class?" I just roll my eyes as an answer, before she continues with an annoyed face: "I've got art. And I should head there now or I'll be late for the first lesson of the year. Hope you enjoy yourself with your stones while I paint something amazingly beautiful." She winks and gives me a wave before we go our separate ways.
I always found it quiet endearing to watch the people coming into the class room on the first day of school. You never know with whom you are going to spend a few hours of every week for a whole year.
The first people to come in are always the nerds. Then enter the little cliques. And at last the cool kids. I seem kind of lucky this year and there is nobody in this room I absolutely cannot stand when Mrs. Spencer comes in and greets us.
Five minutes into the lesson there's a knock on the door. Mrs. Spencer looks startled and stops in the middle of her sentence. "Come in!" I look up from my notebook when I hear footsteps and look at no one other than Calum Hood, the school's upcoming football star. There goes my year of geography without annoying people in class.
"Nice from you that you found the time to enrich us with your presence, Mr. Hood." Did I mention that I love Mrs. Spencer for her sarcasm?
"A huge part of this year's mark will consist of a project we will do in teams of two. It will start today and end shortly before the school year ends." Suddenly it is very noisy in class. Everybody wants to team up with a friend and I am ready to form a team with Martha, a girl I met in last year's geography class.
But Mrs Spencer interrupts us: "No reason to get so excited. I am going to form the teams. Mrs Almond with Mr Carta. Mr Pearson with Mr Jones." She lists some more names before I finally hear my own name. "Mrs Sullivan with Mr Hood."
My mouth hangs open for a moment I can hear some dumb girl complaining: "Oh no, I wish I was her. I want to do it with Calum!" I slowly look over to Calum and our eyes meet for a moment. He just winks at me awakening my gag reflex.
Mrs Spencer claps her hands and looks around with excitement in her eyes. "Now sit together in your groups and I am going to explain the project." I burry my head in my hands and asked quietly: "Why must this happen to me? Why me?!"
"Don't be so shy. I won't bite, I promise." I don't even have to look up to know Calum is sitting right next to me now. But I do so I can glare at him and clarify that I am indeed not shy but furious. He just gives me a sweet smile and runs a hand through his hair.
My eyes go wide for a moment as he winks at me. "So my or your house?" "What?!" is all I can mutter while I am in shock. He looks satisfied with my reaction before he clarifies: "Where do you wanna meet up to do this project?" I let out a deep breath and relax again. "How about the library?"
I slam my lunch down on the table. Em jumps a little while my drink nearly falls over. "What crawled up your ass?" "Calum Hood did." I say angrily before sitting down opposite of her. "How did he master that?" I take a sip of my coke before explaining what happened this morning.
Em rubs my hand in sympathy. "Poor you." "And I thought this year was gonna be one of our best ones." I angrily bite into my sandwich. It is my favourite, egg salad. But today it tastes horribly and I let it fall back on my plate. "I hate this."
"Hey there, sweety." I look up from my phone where I was playing a round off solitaire. Calum takes a seat next to me. I groan internal before putting my mobile away and facing him. "Let's get over with this. Fast, if it's possible."
20 minutes later and I am in shock while Calum is grinning next to me. We just read all the instruction and it turns out I hate Mrs Spencer from now on. Because we do not only have to do a normal school assignment. No, we have got the topic astrology, which means we have to meet up at night and watch the stars and planets together while taking notes.
"Do you have time tonight?" I ask in hope to get this over with as soon as possible. Calum thinks for a Moment before turning his attention back to me: "Sorry, tonight I've got a date with Lucy. And don't even ask about tomorrow or Thursday because there is band practice."
I let out a sigh, which Calum obviously misinterprets: "Don't be disappointed, sweety. We will find some time." I just groan again and want to scream out loud. "What about Sunday? Sunday night will be a great time to start with this."
I don't even come to word before one of his friends storms into the library and calls for him. He lets his hand slide down my arm and winks at me: "See you Sunday, sweetheart." Then he is gone and I couldn't be happier about it.
